Canon 5D v 5D Mark II AF system

->> I was talking with someone earlier today who has a 5D and I was telling him how I like the AF better in the new 5D Mark II. He then said it was the same AF system. Is this true? I had the older 5D and it was a great camera, but the AF in the new one seems better to me.

->> Yes it is the same. I suppose the firmware may be different, but the AF module is the same.

->> It probably is better in the new camera. Yes, the two have the same number of focus points and the AF hardware might even be exactly the same. However, that doesn't mean the computer and/or software interpreting the data is the same.

The 5D and 40D have the same AF module but the 40D has always been erratic compared to the 5D.

->> Owned both cameras at one time (now run mostly Nikon). Actually I liked the original 5D (MK1) a bit more. AF tracking and sensitivity of 5DMKII, tho basically same as MKI...before I sold my MKII in Oct, I couldn't shake the thought that 5DMK1 was maybe a tiny bit better on AF(?). Maybe was my technique, I just had more soft images with 5DMKII when photographing action. Off topic and IMHO, basically either 5D (MKI or MKII) were not intended for sports due slow FPS. They are better as portrait cameras, but can manage sports. Double OT, one interesting note... From comparing another colleague's 5DMKI with my own at the time, my take was Canon made upgrades during production run of the camera, (ie. kept current on firmware upgrades, yet his 1-year newer MKI, had better color). -T
