->> I just found 20-30 VHS tapes of my high school and some college hockey/baseball games that my dad took back in the 80's. He has transfered them to DVD with one of the combination VHS/DVD recorders. This creates a .VOB file and I am trying to find software to be able to edite these into short clips to post online as a streaming video or such.
I have a analog capture card a Canopus ADVC1394 which works great and I have used it a ton BUT if I can do this from the .VOB files it will save me a ton of time.
Anyone edit .VOB files??

->> On the Mac, a program called DVDxDV works great to convert from .VOB to .mov. Easy interface, works quickly. I had a similar project with family movies and I used that with great success.

->> Jim, I've never tried it but I think Handbrake can transcode the .VOB files into MP4 files which should be much smaller and more appropriate for online viewing. I'm not sure however if this will make them easier to edit/splice in a video editing program.
Handbrake is free, open source and available for Mac, Windows and Linux:

->> Anyone know of one that will convert to any of the following:
Video files: .asf, .avi, .dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv.
These are the video types you can use with Windows Movie Maker. Looking to make a short home video with photos and old video clips. |

->> Wesley and all,
I just finalized my research and bought Emicsofts video converter. I used the trial and all went well. It was very easy to use and you can do basic editing.
I have used it all day and just found a couple files that it does not recongnize. These were .vob files from the same DVD. It would read other .VOB files from the same disk but not all, one on each disk and I have no idea why.
I just installed my Canopus ADVC 1394 card inot my new PC, hooked the DVD player to it and all is good, captuirng with no problems but wanted to be able to do this without the DVD player and all but I have options know.
When this works it is perfect for what I needed, just need to find out why one file on each DVD is not recognized.
Hope this helps |
