->> I've used livestream.com a little bit... It's really not complicated - they have flash set up to capture from a video input into the computer.
Here's a sample: http://capitalchristian.com/live/ (it's just replaying an earlier video cast right now) |

->> If you have an iPhone 3G or 3Gs, you can do it for free with the UStream app. You're reading this correctly, this free app makes the iPhone 3G video capable.

| ->> I'm looking to broadcast an 8 hour event, live. A marathon, specifically. I don't have a hosting source yet. I basically need to know how to do this from the bottom up. Thanks for the info so far. |

->> Are you going to try to do it wirelessly or are you broadcasting from a specific location?
Once you get the video to a single computer, it's super easy to send that feed up to a distribution service (such as Livestream). It's usually going to require broadband level bandwidth (~1 megabit or more depending on quality - HD is waaaay out of the question)...
I could see something like a wireless broadband card being a possibility if you have to keep on the move - but this still requires being tethered to a laptop (and this depends on service quality and coverage)
Sending regular quality video wireless over a few hundred feet to a tether point (laptop in a car) is doable (analog only!), and would be in the few hundred dollar range for halfway-decent quality. HD requires $5k or so per camera and only gets you a few hundred feet (if I'm remembering right)... I'm sure there's a digital setup for non-HD somewhere in between too.
If you have contacts at a local TV station, ask how they did things 5 years ago - and if they might be interested in renting some of their old gear (IE a wireless transmitter/receiver combo for short distances)... The quality will still be plenty for internet, and will in a much better cost range. |
