Traveling to Centra America Guatemala w/iphone?
Armando Solares, Photographer

->> I will be traveling to Guatemala in a few days. I want to keep my long distance and roaming fees from getting astronomical so what should I do when I get there? Should I buy a prepaid phone, or sim card? Are there "long distance," texting charges? I guess wifi should not have any restrictions. Any suggestions?

thanks,

Armando

->> I was in Guatemala earlier this year and used a locally bought pre-paid phone. I was able to buy minutes as needed at most of the little convenience stores in Guatemala City and Antigua. I was able to call the states, but texts did not go through.

Depending on where you will be, I wouldn't really count on there being much of a wi-fi signal.

->> Thanks Alex,
I thought that would be the way to buy a cheap pre-paid phone. I just wanted to have access to my email. I was hoping there was a solution for the iphone.

->> I used my iPhone for texting only on a recent vacation in the Caribbean and it worked just fine. I did not however make any calls or use the internet on it so I can't comment about that.

In order to use a local SIM card in your iPhone you'll first have to "unlock" it, however this is an older article and I'm pretty sure "unlocking" is more complicated with the current firmware.

->> Download blackra1n. It's a simple unlock program.

Once you arrive buy a sim and add money on it and you are good to go.

If you are overseas for any long amount of time call AT&T and do a suspend reduce plan. AT&T will bill you 10$ for up to six months so you don't have to pay full price while you are gone.

->> Armando, I use an unlocked cell and just buy local SIM cards. Wanna borrow mine ? I'll be in Miami next week. It's also a lot less attractive to would be thieves.
