->> I can't believe that I'm alone in receiving this email:
=-=-=-=-=
It's me, Ronal. I really don't mean to inconvenience you with my email but am sorry, I made a little trip to UK, and I misplaced my luggage that contains my passport, cell phone, ticket and credit cards. I know this may sound odd, but it all happened very fast. I've been to the US embassy, they're willing to assist me fly without my passport but I'm out of cash, and I have to pay for my ticket. Please, can you lend me some funds right now? I'll be willing to pay you as soon as I get home.
Please reply to my Opera mail, it's connected to my blackberry, which will enable me respond fast to your email as soon as you respond, so that I can forward you my details to send funds to me in England in other to get a ticket home.
I await your response.
Ronal Taniwaki
=-=-=-=-=
Of course, my first response to this is not 'Ron's in trouble,' but 'Ron's email has been hacked.'
Anybody have any info? |

->> His e-mail has been spoofed.
That is a pretty common phishing scam dialog you have there. And if you look closely at the return address it probably doesn't go to Taniwaki.
It's actually pretty funny. It says the person has lost their cell phone, but send e-mail to one that goes to his Blackberry -- he carries a cell and a Blackberry, probably just one.
You cannot fly without a passport. If you lose yours the U.S. Embassy will work to get you a replacement. And he booked a trip without a return ticket and now needs cash to pay for it??? |

Long story, but I do most of the time.
So far, Ronal hasn't contacted me for funds. |

->> Sorry, I've been remiss in lurking the forums. Here's a copy of my canned reply and sorry to all those burdened by the additional email traffic.......
Nope, sorry it’s not really me…..
Hackers got into my earthlink account, lifted and wiped my address book and email archive.
Why wipe my address book?
So I can’t send a group email warning everybody it’s a scam.
Why wipe the email archive?
So they can harvest additional group emails.
Like most phishing scams, they didn’t do their homework.
UK? Ha!
There’s no fly-fishing (that I could afford) in the UK.
Ronal?
Everybody knows I don’t use a signature line.
Blackberry?
Ha! everybody knows I hate the keyboard
My boss says it’s nice to know you have friends.
For me, I say it’s nice to know you have friends who are smart enough to know a phishing scam.
Thanks for your concern |

RONAL? send me your best guess. |

->> Hmmmm --- Ronal will never respond, so let's have a quiz like my favorite NPR program "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" (one that I guarantee he has never listen to):
How did RONAL TANIWAKI get his distinctive first name?
a) His mom was still under the anaesthesia when a nurse asked what name she wanted to put on the birth certificate, slurring "Ronald" ... leaving off the d.
b) His dad named him after the samurai "Ro-Nal" who during feudal Japan left his Master, wandering the countryside working as a butcher in various fish markets.
c) His older sister's name is Lanor, so his parents decided to reverse that for his name.
d) His dad's two best friends were named "Ron" and "Al", when he lost a hand of poker, his payoff included naming his first son after them.
e) Playing Scrabble while 8-months pregnant, his mom's oldest sister dared her to name the child with whatever letters she had on the tray. (Hey, it beats Nalro!)
f) His parents, big-time sci-fi movie buffs, decided to name him "R'onal" which was a minor alien character killed off early in the classic movie "Forbidden Planet".
g) A "ronal" is a delicacy in Japan, thinly sliced, marinated goat tongue, which his parents grew fond of during a visit to Japan in the mid-50s.
h) His name REALLY IS RON, but he added the "AL" as a conversation piece to pick up girls while in junior college. |

->> oh my gosh... Mr. Hanishiro's post is too funny.
I did get to see Mr. Taniwaki once when at JACC, actually twice, in that talk he does where he shows you how to make remotes with Radio Shack parts and tosses out some of those sampler gel packs to the rabid student crowd. Was that his idea? Oh and I remember that portfolio critique he gave me... never mind.
But, I wouldn't advise anybody to purchase tacos in the UK. |
