->> For all of you who thought I could only shoot politicians jogging, or playing ping pong or signing a baseball, finally they let the old guy out on the beach to shoot some surfing!

Last week was epic here in Hawaii with the running of both the In Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay and The Pipeline Masters.
This is a little edit from both locations. I shot from the front yard of a house at Waimea point which was nice. The last time I shot at Waimea Point was 38 years ago which produced my first published photo in Surfer Magazine. (Where did I go wrong and get into political photojournalism - I could of been a surf photog!)
Shot on the Canon 7D.

->> Thanks for sharing the link! Great collection from the events. You need to get out ot the water more often! :)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that some sort of decent swell builds back in this week. I'm heading over few a couple days this week. Reports look like 3-6, which should mean 6-12 faces. That would be nice, but man, the 25 foot plus stuff from last week was epic.

->> Mahalo nui to for all the nice comments. Sorry I missed you Kent, but there was 20,000 people there! (Yes, traffic was a nightmare, I got there at 5am to get a space 3/4 of a mile down the road. By 6am it was a zoo.)
The 7D worked to my advantage here because of the 1.6x lens factor. My 70-210 at the telephoto end was a 336mm. Next time, I bringing a 600 and a 1.4x. I really wanted to get in very close-up and see faces, feet, spray and show the intensity of the sport - from land with a cold drink in hand!
If you need full frame, the 5D is the way to go, but at this time, it still can not do 24 and 60p. The firmware update is slated for next month I think. I'll probably get a full frame model next time and have both.
Mike - it's so hard to time these things unless you live here or get lucky. I stressed out over when to go from Kona which is just 30 minutes by air! You gotta check the charts and forecasts and then deal with if they are holding the contests! Out of three full days on Oahu I shot two, but could of stayed for more since the Pipe is still going. Today might be the last day if conditions are right.
Thanks again for your comments. Aloha. |

| ->> Thank you for the nice comments. I'm thinking about doing a one to two minute Part 2 with some of the 1920 24p normal speed footage I didn't use. |

Shot with the 7D 24p at normal speed.
I have now used up my sports shooting quota for another decade!
