SEC Championship shot with 2-7D's at 60P: HD video only...
Patrick Murphy-Racey, Photographer
Powell | TN | USA | Posted: 11:38 PM on 12.09.09
->> OK, so please bear a few things in mind.... like, this was my first time shooting video only at a football game through an SLR. I covered the game alone without help from other shooters. I spent most of the 1st quarter climbing up and down the catwalk (which is REALLY high). Consider this was 100% manual focus with a 400mm f/2.8L IS and a 200mm f/2L IS. I did better with the 15mm lens for sure... My index finger kept pressing the shutter button, ruining video clips in the midst of peak action until into the 3rd quarter when I taped it to my palm.

It was a great experiment for me. I got to let my hair down. I got to do a few things I wouldn't normally do at a game. I was not on any sort of deadline which was a huge blessing, and the food was good, especially the carrot cake for desert.

The 7D is a remarkable little camera for $1700 but I never would have shot with them if the firmware update had already been available for the 5D Mark II for 60P. I'm hoping that will come soon (hint, hint).

I'm pretty much hooked on shooting HD on the 5D Mark II. I'm as excited as the next guy about the 1D Mark IV, but it still isn't full-frame.

Please forgive my lack if imagination in the editing of this little piece; I am a work in progress on that front... I'm afraid I'm old and slow editing video... "but I'll get there someday, for I have seen the mountaintop...."

Hope you enjoy it!

For those of you out there that are thinking the sky is falling as newspapers close and everyone is losing their jobs... This stuff is fun to learn and people in the real world are willing to pay good cash for talented shooters who can tell stories in various ways. So, learn some new software, build a website, figure out audacity, final cut, or flash, or even start writing (egads). These are no longer separate skills for different people that are not related. These are the skills that people are trying to find in one person. There will always be plenty of work out there for those that are willing to keep learning, growing, stretching, and do all of that on the relatively blank canvas of the world wide web.

Your manual focus was very nice and I love the dip to black between some of your video. I've shot some football for a documentary I'm doing and got so frustrated looking at the screen of the 5D and trying to focus manually at the action I just switched back to using my Panasonic hvx-200 for it. Did that Cavision make all the difference in the world?

->> Great, great footage Patrick. I plan on taking your advice in the next few weeks and shooting a few projects similar to this one. In fact, I'm shooting video with the 7D at a wrestling tournament in town on Friday night. Now THAT will be fun to play back in 60P slow motion.

So, wait, this reminds me of that discussion that was floating around when video on DSLR's was first introduced. Is posting this type of material actually legal, considering TV contracts, etc? I'm not trying to lessen your work by any means, but it definitely brings up the issue again now that it has been done.

BTW, that opening catwalk shot was top-notch, so to speak. Digital zoom in post, by chance?

Also, did you use Final Cut, and did you have to convert to ProRes before you edited it?

Looked very nice!

->> No shins were injured during the filming of this game as no tripod was used. Any zoom you see is purely ken burns effect in iMovie. No body frame device was used save the one my parents & God gave me some 46 years ago. You are sharp, Ethan, to figure that one out. While I have a copy of FCPS6, I've never learned how to use it. iMovie has been like my crack addiction for a year now... I can't stop using it even though I know I should.

As for the footage and TV rights, I was careful to state to the SEC in my proposal that I wanted the rights to use it for self promotion on the internet, so I am completely free to use it in that way. The music is also royalty free with the correct license for that usage.

->> Patrick,

That really is a great video coming from the 7D, I have one myself and love it.

I did not know you could apply Ken Burns effect to video!

Did you conform your video to 30P or 24P before dropping it into iMovie?

If so, what did you use to conform it with?

I shot some college fencing the other day at 60P, and slowed that to 24P, makes fencing much more watchable. :-)

What aperture did you end up shooting the on field stuff with?

Again, really nice job, I know pulling focus on a fast moving sport like football is not easy, I've tried. :-)

I've used digital zooms quite a bit myself, especially for time lapses and such, so I know the look of one pretty well.

->> Scott, I shot in 60P and brought it right into iMovie without any problem. It's a little smaller than I'm used to as you can't shoot at 1080 because only 720 is available right now. It's still a lot of information to process but my phat Mac Pro had no issues crunching it into edited form.

As the for the aperture, you have to shoot wide open, man!!! Seriously, the faster the lens opening, the less dof, which is the look I want. I shot the 200mm f/2 at f/2 at 200ISO, which was pretty awesome considering I was in what we used to call the "no chrome dome." I hated not being able to use the 5DMII bodies instead as I really missed shooting my 600mm. Because of the 1.6x conversion, I was forced to use glass that I wouldn't normally use: 15mm, 200, 400. My normal setup for shooting football on 1.3x bodies is 50mm, 300, 600mm... The 600 and I have a longstanding relationship together each Saturday in the Fall.

Also, if any of you that want to try this for yourself, the older non IS lenses work a lot better as the IS glass seems to have really stiff focusing rings. I was wishing I had my II version 400mm f/2.8L last Saturday night. it had the best feeling manual focus ever!!! I have to admit though that the EF200mm f/2L IS is a great lens... Super fast AF when shooting stills, but maybe the best of any of my IS lenses for manual focus.

Now, to show you guys what an idiot I really am, I've not shot 24P yet with the 7D. It doesn't work on my Panasonic AVHC150 at all and has to be converted in order to be brought into iMovie. I need to try it out.

Last, Paul McAniff at Canon USA really helped me figure out what body to use at the game. I had made a call to borrow a friend's 5DMII so I could shoot those bodies instead, but Paul told me to shoot the 60P setting on the 7D's. While there are rumors out there right now about the firmware upgrade for the 5DMII having 60P, no one at Canon has said anything to that effect yet. It's possible since the 5DMII has only a single processor, that the information coming off the FF chip might be too much for that processor to handle at 60P. We'll just have to wait and see but getting 24P on the 5DMII will make me happy.

One last thought on the 5DMII. Canon had no idea what they had done when they put video into the 5DMII. They realize it now and are seeing huge segments of journalists and indy film-makers flock to one of their products that had never been sold to that market before. They get it now! While I'm excited to get a 1DM4 into my hands (and onto the field), I'm even more excited about what Canon will replace the 5DMII with. I'm thinking time-code, manual audio with a balanced input, and more options for codec & frame rates, and hopefully a longer than 4G limit on clip length. It's good to be shooting Canon, that's for sure!!!

This 8 min. video will explain how I did it, with what gear, and what I'm hoping Canon might do in the near future...

For most of us shooting video on the 7D, we use Apples Cinema Tools that comes with the Final Cut Studio suite to conform the footage. Here is a link to a short tutorial. I think you'd have much better luck trying this out.

All this business of codec, transfer rates, etc.. it all baffles me... I'll get there but not tonight... but I'll take a look at your link and try to figure it out... I know iMovie is maybe 50% of the equivalent of elements vs. photoshop CS4... I'm just finding it difficult to find time to learn that package... It's sheer largeness scares the crap out of me though I know I need to have been in it a year ago... thanks! pat

I really like the shot of the two players (numbers 1 & 24) celebrating. Really clean composition and then they walk away at each edge of the frame, perfect. Looks like a blocked and directed scene from a music video.

http://vimeo.com/8244223

I put it together in a journalistic style, though with the 60p mode in use throughout the night, I slowed down a lot of the game footage more than I normally would. I'd like to try shooting the next one in 24p just to see the results.

Patrick, you really paved the way for this one. I watched your "how it was done" piece before I went to the arena last night and found many of your tips useful for pulling focus, following the action, etc.

I think you'll have a much better time at 60P for action. Now you could probably do some nice stuff with coaches in 24P... but stuff that moves too fast is really hard to edit and slow motion seems pretty much impossible... just my .02.

I liked your stuff, btw, you got a few nice breakaways and kept her sharp to the rim, which is mucho-difficulto. Some of your longer lens shots were a bit shaky and might benefit from some post "smoothing," but in general your stuff looked great man!!! Weird shooting hoops horizontal, no?

->> For sure different not being able to go vertical at all. Good tips on the post processing. I used a monopod for everything, both standing and kneeling, but all of my lenses are non-IS so that may have been part of it. Does anyone know if that has an effect with DSLR video? I know my camcorders have some type of IS built-in, so I'm sure it plays a role with video in this realm as well.

Pulling focus was definitely interesting. I tried to get a general idea of where it needed to be for down-court shots, then just gradually rolled it to the right as the action came toward me. Pretty much the same process as I use for shoulder mounts, but way way harder to keep steady. A shoulder rig for this of some sort may be in my future.

Re: 24p, that's what I was thinking as well. Your Saban shot was 24 wasn't it? Definitely not good for action -- well, maybe baseball but basketball is out.

I may have a chance to shoot 7D video at a snow football game this week (just for fun), so I'll be sure to post back with any results.

I'm waiting for the mkIV and to see if there are any AF issues and if Canon has figured out the mkIII af problems before I jump in, but I sure hope they've got it all sorted out. I can't afford both a 7d and a mkIV but you make a great voice for the 7d with the SEC video.

One question off topic ... the walk video - is the band a local christian band or are they commercially available? The music is very cool.

Thanks

David
