Credentialing for more than 1 organization

->> Most events I have shot have always been for a single source, such as a newspaper, magazine, etc. The credentials were always issued for the organization I was shooting for. My question is for the following situation…
Say there was a large event, such as a collegiate golf tournament. Golfers from around the country will be there, and let’s say I have done my homework and found several newspapers that would want images of various golfers for the local hometown newspaper.
Now, for the credentials, most events now look down on applying as a straight freelancer. So obtaining a credential with that angle may be difficult. If I obtain a pass from a specific newspaper, the credentials usually state that you can only shoot for the credentialed organization.
My question is, how do you approach the credentialing process to officially be able to shoot for multiple organizations as a freelancer? Do I need to list all the interested news organizations?
Any advice or previous experiences would be greatly appreciated. |

->> In my experience most events/organizers prefer the publications to request credentials instead of the individual reporters/photographers.
In this case simply having each publication you are shooting for list your name as the photographer on their credential request will probably take care of the issue. |

| ->> As long as each publication is aware you are double dipping, it should`nt be an issue. As Kevin said, they will most likely have to contact the event organizers or publicists individually. |

->> By saying local hometown newspaper I am assuming you mean individual papers not in competition in various parts of the country. In this case make sure you don't send the same photos to every newspaper, but in my thinking I would obtain a credential from one of those organizations taking care of their needs first and foremost.
Then do a little freelancing work on the side and don't get into the red tape of telling the tournament folks what you're trying to do, otherwise it can become a big headache. And as well since you're not a staffer with any of these organizations the individual newspapers have a one time right to your work, unless you have signed a contract stating otherwise that they want your images exclusively for their organization.
So, if the papers are not in direct competition with one another and you have no prior arraignments other than to take photos of a certain golfer for them. I would use the credential for more than one purpose and yes let them obtain a credential for you. |

->> Yes, by shooting events such as this, the newspapers would be interested in only their local participants, whether it be golf, tennis, or a high school football tournament. There would be no 'competition' as to who would get the 'best' image.
I was wondering if I would need to pick up a half dozen credentials for the event. |

| ->> I think if the organizers see your name on multiple credential requests they'll be smart enough to figure out what is going on. I doubt they'll think there are five different photographers named Brian Jorg coming to cover their tournament and issue five credentials. |

| ->> I've done the same as Jon mentioned above...they look down on someone just wanting to shoot with no outlets, not so much on those shooting with multiple outlets like mentioned. |

->> Brian
A few years back I was assigned to cover an NCAA track event. I ended up shooting the event for just under a dozen schools. My credential was DENIED by the host university since 5 schools ended up requesting a credential for me (I didn't ask them to I was credentialed already). The host school SID assumed I was trying to pull a scam...thus denied the credential request.
Since my primary client at the time was an NCAA D1 Univ, where I was the Primary Athletics Photo for 20 sports I ended up having my SID apply, since I was going there to shoot for that school as well and that settled the issue.
But anyway, some people have no common sense, may see your name 3 or 4 times and figure you're up to something...like trying to earn a living. |

->> You do have to watch out with spreading yourself too thin however. Many editors will want their stringer to shoot exclusively for them because you obviously can't be in two places at once.
Suppose the one athlete your supposed to be shooting just made a string of birdies on the last 4 holes to take the lead in the tournament but your actually over on hole 8 shooting a non contender for another outlet who win or lose still is going to want images.
I'm not saying it can't be done, but some outlets won't exactly be pleased that they are paying someone for images who is also double or maybe quadruple dipping when they could of instead gone to someone else who would be their exclusively for them. |
