Nikon Repair
Jamie Rector, Photographer
Long Beach | CA | USA | Posted: 2:53 PM on 12.07.09
->> Hi all,

I am in Los Angeles and last time I had to repair something Nikon, I was extremely unhappy with the service at the Nikon repair center. Does anyone know where I can find a GOOD repair shop in the greater Los Angeles area?

Thanks!

Jamie Rector

->> I'll echo Sean. I've had nothing but flawless performance and extremely satisfying customer service from the folks at NPS in California. That includes body and lens check/repair/clean/etc.

->> It's a D300 and I got some lenses repaired in cali, NPS and all, and it was a total nightmare. Maybe I'll try them again, perhaps that was a one time bad situation.
Thanks!

Over the years, I've had enough quirky service that I believe that no major organization is significantly better than any other.
•I've gone thru "computer system upgrades" that left service reps unequipped to answer basic questions about repair status - listening to someone shuffling thru a stack of paper wound up being status quo.
•Having a recommended third party shop pass an item on to the manufacturer - without telling us - and returning it as beyond economical repair. Assuming it was beyond their level of expertise, we forwarded the item to the manufacturer's shop ourselves. Imagine our surprise when they asked why it was back.
•One shop, while providing decent service, had an ongoing language barrier in their customer service operation. We simply had no idea what they were telling us.
• The ever popular "Parts Hold" and ensuing delay has had equipment back in our hands before the online information indicated it was shipped.
I'd suggest that you make friends with Melville, take some cookies along and drop your gear off. This truly is a situation where it helps to know someone.

->> I took a lens to Robert's in Indianapolis the day before Thanksgiving. They sent it to another shop they deal with and are very happy with their service. The girl at Robert's said if you're not an NPS member, repairs are taking six weeks or so.

There is a Nikon repair place in Illinois that works on bodies.

I've heard a couple of good things about this place, but personally have never used them.

->> It's $500. I had hit the buffer a few times (all I shoot is RAW) and figured that the next time it happened I would probably miss important shots. Forget what the situations were, but I was firing like crazy in repeated bursts. I rarely mash the shutter, but there's no way I'm gonna experience "press-and-nothing" now.

I was on parts hold (might have been for the other issue I had, a stuck CF door) but it still was only two weeks. Sending the other body in now for the buffer upgrade and the lens release button not "seating" properly.
