"As of yesterday, some section editors at all of the company's papers, including The News, will now report directly to Carr's team of sales managers, now referred to as general managers."

For what it's worth.

->> And this was a surprise? Newspapers back in 2000 experimented with those free community sections and advertorial sections that rehashed news content into a package or had reporters that reported to a sales team. I went through that Hell with East Valley Tribune when I found myself relocated to the Scottsdale Views and at the Arizona Republic with the magazine division. It was a constant battle over ethics as I had unbiased news to report with the strong arm of an ignorant sales manager or three trying to get me to "tweak" my coverage a little.

In regards to the Arizona Republic, I had an ally in the Director of Photography who I didn't answer to at the time, but helped step up and vindicate my role as a journalist.

But as wiser, older editors get phased out, newer and multi-platform thinking office managers move in...changing the landscape...effecting credibility...

And trust me. It will.

->> Scott, thanks for the input. I'll keep that in mind, though I'm pretty much with the "wait and see" camp on all this.

Oh, and given all the grammar mongering around here, I'm pretty sure you meant "affecting" ...

As an old teacher once told me, "affect is the verb, effect is the noun."

Cheers,

On the eve of my layoff, the Executive Editor told me I was "always the best prepared editor at the daily PM Page One news meeting".

Obviously, that didn't count for squat. No one in a leadership newsroom role cares about quality...they only care about saving their sad asses in an economy of dwindling bottom lines, at the expense of their readers.....anybody remember them?

Business "synergy" plans are just another attempt to try and put a buff shine on a turd. Not only won't it work, but it is another biz side darling that diminishes the core product....oh that's right....real news!
