->> I just received an email from"Big 12 Communications" addressed to "Big 12 Championship Game Photographers" that contains the following statement:
"No photography equipment shall be attached to the goal posts. Tripods and/or monopods are not permitted on the sidelines."
Has anyone else run across a monopod restriction like this at a football venue. Does the NCAA have a new (or old) policy prohibiting monopods at football games? (I know that the NCAA has this restriction for its Volleyball Championship - but the sidelines at a VB game would seem to be completely different from the sidelines at a football game -- and how many 400mm lenses show up on the sidelines of VB games!)
Finally, does anyone have any contacts at the Big 12 who could help clarify or better yet, change the statement? (Otherwise, I suppose I need to renew my gym membership!) |

->> I know in the Big 10 they have a policy that says monopods are supposed to be an additional 3 feet back from the boundary line around the field, but I've never seen that actually enforced one time in 6 straight seasons. Everyone shots right on the line, monopod or not.
Guess it might be about time to start hiring an assistant and outfit them with a hat that has a 3/8" stud sticking out the top of it for the big games |

->> Looks like whoever made some calls got the policy changed. I just received this email:
MEDIA ADVISORY - PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY CHANGE
After consultation with several of you, the Big 12 Conference will allow monopods ONLY on the sideline for the 2009 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship. Photography staff will still not be permitted to use tripods, but monopods will be allowed.
Thank you for your adherence to these guidelines. |
