->> In the Toronto Maple Leafs - Buffalo Sabres game tonight a photographer was hit in the face through the photo hole by a Ryan Miller clearance. The Buffalo goaltender seemed concerned for the photographer, and after the game gave him his stick.
Another reason to remember to shoot with both eyes open.
Here's the clip - it's a full highlight of the game but go to 4:50 and watch until the end.

| ->> At one point Bowen or Cole, forget which, suggested that it might be SS.com member Steve Russell. Hope whoever it was is alright and got the puck too! |

->> I took a puck in the face at a Kings game a couple of decades ago, back when the glass at the Forum was only six feet high. I'm 6-3 and was able to shoot over the top. Rather than just duck straight down out of harm's way, I tried to dodge the puck and ended up moving right into it.
I'm still a little loopy.

->> Good on Ryan Miller indeed, and good on Steve Russell for staying and finishing the game.
I can't decide if I would be happy to have the stick... just another piece of equipment to carry home at the end of the night.
If nothing else it should've been the absolutely perfect opportunity for a "Hockey-Detrick". |

->> It's also a marker of Miller's 15th career shutout. Nice memento when he enters the Hockey Hall of Fame!
Chin up Steve. You looked a little dazed when they put the camera on you while Joe Bowen was yukking it up and cringing at the welt on your cheek.
A memorable night for everyone....unless you're a Leafs fan :( |

Damn right
Hopefully Miller will buck up and send Steve a nice gift card to a local camera store. Ryan Miller is a very avid photographer when not playing hockey.
As others mentioned, good on your Steve for staying in the game. |

->> Yup it was me.
And I did have both eyes open!
Funny sidebar, I was sitting next to Leafs photographer Graig Abel when hit.
This summer I took a baseball of the ol' noodle, while sitting next to his son Dave Abel.
If your coming to Toronto and have to shoot next to them cover up!
With all the attention I blogged about it,
how it happened and my thoughts on Miller

| ->> Nice story Steve, and those of us in this area know all to well about how good of a guy Ryan is - he's done a lot in the area to help the community. Just imagine, the media here was saying Lalime was going to get the start! |

| ->> A few more stops like that and the Leafs may try to talk Steve into dropping his camera gear and taking over as their number one keeper...I realize the irony in writing this as the Leafs beat the Canadiens 3 zip tonight... |

| ->> Glad you are OK Steve.. many years ago, Patrick Roy cleared a puck into a hole I was shooting from in Anaheim and destroyed a 70-200mm lens, the filter shattered all over the ice, Sakic came over to check on me as I was stunned, the officials cleaned up the mess and I left that game with a shiner from the camera's eye cup being pushed into my face and one big repair bill. We laughed about it later and I joked about sending him a bill, but a signed puck took the sting away a little bit back then. Happy snapping and don't forget to always shoot with both eyes open! -Shelly |

Was on the other side of you at the Tampa game when you got nailed, and actually thought the ball was going to nail me when I looked back. |

->> Glad you are feeling better.
Playing hockey myself for over 25 years I know how much a puck and stick hurt when getting hit in the face. I have over 25 stitches in my face from a high stick , that broke my eye socket and cheekbone. Good for you for sticking the game out. As they guys in the locker room would say. "Way to go Boys, way to shoot, your going to have nice shiner eh?" |
