->> Has anyone shot there? I always use strobes and will be covering the Alta at Davis game on Tuesday.
Are they allowed or have you used them there?
What settings did you use if you shot ambient?
Thanks |

->> Matt,
Davis High School gym, unless things have changed since the last time I shot in there, has some of the worst available light in the state. It is especially dark under the basket. You cannot shoot direct-on-camera strobe at a high school basketball game in Utah. If you want to use strobes you will need to super clamp them to a railing above the student section or mount them on light stands up above the main stands and trigger them with Pocket Wizards. You will get better light this way anyway. If you want tips on how to do this go to this older David Hobby strobist link: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/04/on-assignment-prep-basketball.html |

->> August,
Just so you know you can direct flash, during the playoffs :) I did it last year at the e-center.
But I shoot bounced and to hear it has bad lighting is good to hear. Makes it easier to strobe.
Thanks for the information August :) Good to hear from other Utah shooters |

->> Matthew-
Going into a school's gym with strobes might be trickier than doing it at the playoffs venue, because you're going into a coach's home turf. In the playoffs they have less control over the arena. I'd suggest you show up early, do some tests and make sure everyone's cool with it.
Otherwise, you're looking at one dark gym. I'm thinking it was 1/125th @ f2.8, ISO 1600 in the NEW Davis HS Gym. In the old gym it was like a fog of yellow. Oh, I could go on and on about the old Davis High School gym...
Anyone who wants to hear about it can send me five dollars. |

->> Trent,
Yeah I have contacted him and waiting to hear. I usually just flash locally as I know all of the coaches.
Your right coaches not in my area might have issues with it, but they are usually okay with it. I have had maybe 3 coaches tell me no.
Trent do you have any images inside the new gym? Some wide angle shots? That might help me prepare my setup |

->> I just want to clear up something, I use actual strobes, not on camera flash.
thanks |

| ->> I've found that it's helpful to carry a few color proofs that show my lighting in action to show coaches, game managers and refs that the lights won't be in players faces and how wonderful the result will be. Officials seem to be more cooperative if they can see that their kids will look as good as a human can manage. |
