Removing a Canon lens mount.

| ->> Has anyone managed to disassemble and remove the lens mount off of a canon body? I've got a sheared mount pin on one of my bodies and happen to have the spare parts from my junk bin to replace it, but can't figure out how to extract the ring from the body to get to the spring mechanism for the pin. |

| ->> I believe the lens mount just unscrews from the lens without having to monkey around with the wiring harness in the lens. I had a bent mount on my 300 and took it to a repair shop near my house and the guy just said he had to unscrew the mount and swap it out for another ring. If I had known it was that easy I would have done it myself and saved the $40.00 it cost me to have it done. You also might give the CPS a call. I hope this helps. |

->> Thomas, which body is it? Looking at the bodies I have there are simply the screws on the mount that looks like if you unscrew them the ring will come right off.
If this is not a rush and you are still having trouble, on Monday morning I'd call the guys at Midstate Camera Repair and they would probably talk you through it. |

->> Impact enough to shear off a lens locking pin or for that matter, any significant stress on a lens mount will more than likely affect what's called the "mount dimensions".
Out of whack mount dimensions can affect sharpness and focus points...for instance the top part of a frame could be sharp and the bottom slightly unsharp.
After discussions with repair technicians I've learned that even improperly picking up a camera body with a heavy lens attached can be enough to alter mount dimensions.
Bottom line: Have a reputable repair tech check it out.
Just my thoughts...best of luck with the self-repair. |

->> The spare pin is on a crushed 1D (mark I) and I can't get that mount off to get it out. The pin is going in to a Mark 2N.
Robert, surprisingly, the camera is still tack sharp and I've kept on using it - I just need to make sure the lens doesn't rotate off the contacts. It was a one in a million shot that everything came through fairly unscathed. There was a 1.4x converter on the combo when it went down on field turf so everything broke apart like an Indy car rather than putting any torque on the lens mount. All the stress went on the Z axis, sheering the pin, then rotating on around to the other max when all the stress went in to the 1.4x and ripped it apart like a blown tire.
As for sending it in for repair... I just like a challenge. |

->> I was just about to ask this same question. Does anyone know how much mount replacement for a Canon 70-200 2.8 USM non-IS. Our college intern was shooting the southstate championship with me Friday night and stuck his lense in his belt after I told him it was a bad idea and that he should put it in the bag he got hit in the huge scrum afterwards and the lense mount took a direct impact onto concrete and compelty smoked the mount.
Needless to say he has ordered a thinktank whip it out like I carry now.... now we are trying to guestimate the butcher bill from Canon....of course were a Nikon paper so no cps discount this time. |

->> On their film bodies the front bezel has to come off because part of the mount sets behind this bezel. It starts with the two screws above the mount, but looking at my Mark II it looks like most of the front of the camera has to come off. I've replaced mounts when I had film bodies but this doesn't look like a project I would try.
And my friends will tell you, I'll take just about anything apart. :)

->> Thomas, sorry, I have nothing to offer as far as advice. Good luck and I understand the love of the challenge.
Bert, maybe it's time to restart the Luau and have it staffed by our mothers to teach people how to be respectful and play nice? Just sayin'. |

->> Robert-
Wow, looks like you have a fan. FWIW, everything Robert posted is true, so... To answer the question, he knows not to pick his 400 up by the body. |

Sam, I got the sense that the cretin who emailed Bert isn't a member. The Luau would have to get REALLY big to handle the number of people who walk around with a attitude, looking for something or someone to lip off about or to. |

->> As far as the E-mails go I would "almost" agree with Eric since I am not sure how much good that would do since most have our websites listed with all sorts of contact info.... our member pages have all sorts of contact info open to all as well.
I would not need to be a member to get in touch with any member in some form, E-Mail phone etc.
I have also received some very good information from Non Members as well as enough work that I will take any negative e-mails with a grain of salt.
I have learned to ignore what I don't want to hear/see/read...
