->> Has anyone tried these?
http://shop.freehands.com/
They are advertised for use while texting, but they look like they could work well in winter photography. |

| ->> Yes, something very similar. If you have a Bass Pro near your home check some out there (fly fishing section). Bought a neoprene pair with thumb and first finger fold back, its not very warm. Use another pair which is fleece and has thumb fold back, and the cover of the four fingers is like a mitten you fold back. The latter pair being very warm, just fold the flaps back to keep you warm during time outs, quarter breaks, half time etc. I think you would be happy. Bass Pro's prices were much better. |

| ->> Ken Manzella makes the best winter shooting mitten that I have ever used. They are made of fleece with a pocket in the fold back mitten section for putting a chem hot pack into. The thumb has a slit for allowing your thumb to poke out of. All the fasteners are magnetic instead of velco. I got mine at Dick's |

->> Just got a pair of these
http://www.rei.com/product/754468
They are Armourstretch from Underarmour and I love them. They're liners but do a good job keeping my hands warm. I also wear a large, but bought these in a medium so they fit very tight but still comfortable. |

->> Gonna give you a big fat (and rare) "Uninformative" on this one, Eric...do you know how many different gloves Manzella makes? LOL And searching Dick's web site brings up nada - only Astros jerseys.
Any more help you can give in identifying these magic magnetic mittens? |

| ->> I'm not sure if it would make a difference and I'm very sure that the magnets in a pair of mittens is not quite the same as walking into an MRI machine but I would be a bit concerned about having any sort of magnet around my camera or memory cards. |

->> Chuck well deserved I should have been more specific ......http://www.sportsshooter.com/ericcanha/gloves/ hope that this makes up for it.
P.S. The Inap.....wasn't from me.
Mike magnets will not effect CF cards or the camera. I shot 51 youth hockey games wearing these and never had an issue with a single card or file. |

| ->> I have a pair of the Freehands. They're awesome gloves and very well made. I got the mens softshell model. They're not deep winter gloves by any means, but they do a good job of keeping the wind out and keeping my hands moderately insulated. The magnets are way better than the ones that use velcro to fold back the fingers. One benefit over the Bass fishing gloves is that no air gets in through the flap when it it closed over your finger. There is enough overlap in the fabric to completely seal the opening shut. Even when closed, the gloves aren't too thick to still adjust the camera controls. |

->> For fall (not sub zero) I wear a pair of winter golf gloves by FootJoy, they are about $20 at Dicks... They are OK for the 40's-50's or so, and at least much better then no glove. They are also thin enough I can feel all my controls, almost like I was not wearing them.
It was also suggested to me by others, you could get a fold-back mitt, as well and double up. That way the finders are still not bare skin.
The gloves work well for me for fall baseball... |

| ->> I use a pair of hatch operator SWAT gloves. They are ostrich palmed and really form fitting. An added benefit is they are nomex as well. Finger dexterity is awesome! They are good down to about 15 degrees. Highly recommend them. |

->> I use something similar to this: http://www.foxglovesinc.com/shop_item.php?iid=2
They're not ideal for the coldest weather, but I haven't found a glove that allows for more manual dexterity and the grip surface is a big help. They are thin, so it's probably not enough for sub-freezing temps, but in other cool/cold conditions, they're fabulous. |

->> I got my gloves from a local police supply house. www.streichers.com you might ask a local police officer where they get their duty gear from locally. I would assume that most major metro areas would have a shop that sells them. Also, a quick google search came up with numerous mail order houses that sell them online.
Description from the Hatch website:
Hatch Operator Series Tactical Gloves Black
The Operator is designed by and specifically for SWAT use and allows you to perform with surgical precision. The ergonomic fit tactile sensation and features found in The Operator are unmatched.
The Operator’s Kevlar construction provides 4 times the cut-resistance of leather as well as heat and flash protection to 800°F (427°C). The entire glove is sewn with non-melting nylon thread. Water resistant kangaroo leather palms provide superior abrasion and cut resistance. An elasticized wrist keeps the Operator taut, while the elasticized gauntlet keeps out foreign objects and prevents snagging. Cut-ring stitching allows optional removal of the index finger for trigger control, without unraveling the remaining edge.
A second layer of leather in the palm provides additional protection and is ergonomically cut to prevent bunching while clenching objects. Foam padding in the heel of the palm cushions the shock of firearm recoil. Posi-Grip™ non-skid material in the cradle of the hand provides a confident grip when using weapons or tools.
Precise fit
Kevlar® and leather construction
Cut and heat-resistant protection beyond 800°F
Armor-Tan™ treated goatskin leather palms with DRAGON print etching
Secondary "ergo-cut" layer in palm
Foam padded heel
Posi-Grip™ non-skid material in cradle
Cut-Ring™ stitching on index finger
Hope that helps. |

->> OK, I took the plunge and ordered a pair of the Ragg-wool type and another of the fleece type. The order arrived in about 4 days.
I used the Ragg-wool ones to shoot a foot race in Central Park, NYC; about 2 hours in 30-ish temps. They worked well. They have a layer of Thinsulite for insulation and the tips of the index and thumb fold back and are held with velcro (other models use tiny magnets). Except for my exposed fingertips, my hands were pretty warm. I'll add a light inner pair this weekend and give it another go in 20-ish weather.
BUT, I could not get the XL size fleece model on my big paws. The ragg-wool has a bit of stretch to them so they fit, but the fleece did not stretch at all. Freehands nicely took them back and quickly issued a refund. Unfortunately they do not have XXL.
Overall, good product, good customer service. |
