->> Deb,
You don't have to upgrade, but there is an added step of using the latest DNG converter from Adobe, which will convert newer RAW files into a DNG that older Adobe apps can use.
Goto this website (it's Adobe Lab's):
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.6
Download the DNG converter, and then use that app to convert your D3s NEF's to DNG. You will then have twice as many files. Open the DNG in your version of Photoshop (CS3), and you're set.
Keep the NEF's until you get a newer version of Photoshop that will handle the NEF's rather than having to convert to DNG. |

| ->> Yes. Max doesn't know that Nikon's software will do a much better job of processing their NEF files. Adobe can but they don't look as vibrant. That being said, The latest View NX will not work with Mac's new OS. Your best bet is to grab Nikon's NX2 (Capture) and process your NEF files into TIFFS. That will work until Nikon works the kinks out of View NX. No hard feelings Max. |

->> I'm wondering if thats the same thing with Canon .CR2 files and Canons software. Does the Camera company's RAW software create better images than converting them in Photoshop?

->> Ah, but I bet Max does know about Adobe's Camera Raw Profiles, which replicate Nikon's Picture Control settings and render NEFs pretty much the same way the Capture NX2 does?

->> Gotta second Chuck; I use the Adobe profiles with my D3 bodies and they really help make images pop so they look almost identical to the way NX handles them.
As much as I like the NX look, ACR handles my NEF's far quicker and in a manner I'm more accustomed to than (10+ years of using Photoshop yadda yadda).
And Debra; you *could* upgrade to CS4 to bypass the clunky step of converting to DNG first - but you really should be doing that for backup / redundancy anyways (1 HDD with NEF's, another with DNG's)? |

->> Breeze Downloader could take some of the sting out of the extra step of converting to DNG... during the download process you can set Breeze Downloader to also:
1. Convert RAW files to DNG
2. Rename the files
3. Add IPTC data from templates
4. Simultaneously backup jpg files to another location
And more, I'm sure:

I intend to avoid the "Adobe Tax" to upgrade CS2 as long as I can! |

->> I know about capture NX and View NX but turning a RAW file into a TIF can be clunky. If you decide to change anything in the conversion process you have to rerender the file which can be lengthy. On the other hand, you can work a DNG file quickly using PS or LR. And if you use Smart Objects, you can even rerender the RAW within a layer without having to redo the progress on your image.
The ACR profiles are nice and certainly look good. I've used it with the LR3 beta and am impressed.
To each their own on workflow.
Jeff, I have used DPP, and it's excellent at rendering out a file. I wouldn't edit with it, but if your exposure is spot on, then a file out of DPP has very rich colors. However, at high ISO, it seems to be noisier than ACR conversions. But at lower ISO, it produces a beautiful file.
Another nice (but pricey) option is Capture One Pro. |

->> Keep in mind with DNG you can embed the entire raw file during the conversion process if you choose that option...so you really don't have to keep two sets of files.
To do this, download and install the DNG converter Max mentioned above. Before you do your conversions, click the "Change Preferences" button and check the box marked "Embed Original RAW file". This will embed the entire RAW file, untouched, inside the DNG file. Makes for a bigger file - but smaller than two separate files.
To reverse the process and extract the original raw files later, run the converter again and click the "Extract" button at the bottom. |

->> Forgot to mention...
It's also important when you do the DNG conversion to select the appropriate compatibility level from the preferences screen. The default is CS4 and above, which doesn't do you much good.
Before you do any conversions, click "Change Preferences" and select "Camera Raw 4.6 and later" from the pull-down. This will make it so you can open the DNG files in CS3.

->> I'm an NX2 Guy!!
When I shot the US Nationals last September I came home with over 8K D3 and D700 NEF's.
I separated them by Lighting Conditions and Batched them. Then I just walked away or went to bed. I love NX2!!
When I shoot in the Studio, under controlled conditions, the Batch Process is a breeze. I use NX2 for just about everything I do in the Studio.
The new Version of NX2 does D3s Files.
FWIW, I dislike the results I got from ACR on my studio NEF's, maybe it's the way I light or whatever, but my NEF's look better under NX2.
BTW, I'm still working under OSX Leopard, not doing the Snow Leopard thing yet!! |
