Completely OT: Do you name your camera/computer/archives?

->> So I came across a thread on Reddit.com about names IT people give their servers and archives and wondering if anyone here names their cameras, computers and/or archives and if so, what and why?
My Macbook Pro and several of my flashdrives are named "Clov" after the Samuel Beckett character.
My external archive drive is named LUH after the George Lucas character in "THX 1138."
I have yet to name the cameras...
What does everyone name everything?

| ->> In J-School they named the computers after comedians. I think that was a vain effort to keep people laughing whenever the machines would crash. |

->> it has merit
I've found that naming drives makes sense -- especially because drive characters change
one of my previous employers used the names of historical figures
i tend to agree that "Darwin" is a bit easier to remember than "XH45V3RV"
I guess it all depends on how big of a geek you are ;) |

->> I have two drives in my onsite server named.........goes-inta and goes-onta...... Files from cards get ingested to goes-inta and once the tournament is over goes-onta (a mirrored drive) is removed from the case and the files go on to the server in the office via usb hd docking station. .........
Back to what is left of the Thanksgiving wine..... |

| ->> My network is Middle Earth...my computers are Gondor (file server tower), Rohan (fast work station), Hobbiton (netbook), and Lorien (notebook). Previous computers have been named The Shire, Rivendell, and Mirkwood. Yes, I'm a total LOTR geek from way before the movies. |

->> Its pretty useful to name your drives - it helps keep things organized in your brain and allows you to know what you have on your desktop at a glance. Plus, it makes labeling your drives easier, and takes he guesswork out of drive connections.
For example, I always have a ton of climbing/outdoor gear vendor stickers lying around. I have about a dozen external drives at any given time on my desktop, and I've taken to naming them after these vendors, then slapping the vendor sticker on the drive. Then on my Mac desktop, I relabel the drive with an icon from the vendor (grab it off their website, etc).
So I will name a drive "Metolius: 2009-01 to 06 RAW", then put a Metolius sticker on it, then label it with the Metolius brand logo. When I need to disconnect/connect a drive, I can immediately match up the logo with the sticker. Simple, effective and fun. |

| ->> My desktop is NC1701D. Laptop network names are Reliant, Galileo and Excelsior. Individual drives are named after Greek and Roman gods. External drives are nicknames for the area teams I cover regularly. |

->> In a datacenter I work at, we started naming servers after famous golf courses (many local ones too). That was many years ago when we had like 30-40 servers. During our expansion of systems, some admins started getting fed up with the names because they needed a cheat sheet to know what was running on them, so eventually the naming stopped when we were about the 150 mark (guess some folks hate golf??). The funny part was that quite a few of these servers never did get replaced and have lived on for many, many years (even longer now due to virtualization). Some people get it (ah, a golf course), other people would butcher the names, others had no clue. We loved hearing the help desk field calls saying users can't connect to AUGUSTA, STANDREWS, PINEHURST, PEBBLEBEACH, etc. The interesting part is that we learned a LOT about golf courses and funny enough I've played/visited quite a few of the real places since we started this or at least recognize them on tv or in video games.
In the end, it was a politcally correct thing to do until it got out of control. We could have done other things, like beer names, but that would be frowned upon. Now that we have more common-purpose names, people still don't know half of the time what is what.
The big thing is to make it interesting and actually managing equipment/devices gets easier if you're somewhat organized or have a creative mind. I know of others who use roller coasters or Peanuts characters. We just wanted one that would be difficult to use up due to #'s...so I don't think there's any shortage of golf courses anytime soon...lol.
Haven't named my personal stuff anything fancy really because I don't deal in large #'s. |

->> My desktop PC is called Speedy II (a ground up component rebuild of the original 'Speedy' - only the chassis remained the same); main laptop is Sylvie (quite tempremental, so the name kinda suits) and the netbook I'm using right now is Pixie.
I don't have names for my cameras - well, I don't think modifying the filenames to "D3A" and "D3B" really counts, does it? It's just my basic way of determining which camera shot which file... |
