DSLR vid & Final Cut Express

->> I have used the 5D Mk II for a while now & edited using Final Cut Express. I had simply resigned myself to having to wait to render anything I wanted to put in my timeline. Took forever but the vid quality was so good it was worth it.

Preamble over--now I also have a D300s & I need to use it for some web video where quick takes priority over quality. The D300s outputs a .avi file, which, naturally, needs to be rendered in Final Cut Express. I have MPEG Streamclip and can convert the D300s native video to just about anything else, but in my experimentations so far I can't seem to come up with the magic formula of matching up a video format with the correct FCE settings. .mp4, .dv, .mov--every combo I've tried gives me the dreaded "Unrendered" message.

I am aware the D300s shoots at 24fps, and near as I can tell FCE only offers me the option of 25 or 30fps. Could that be the unmovable obstacle...?

Anyone out there know the secret knock to get DSLR vid into a Final Cut Express-friendly format?

Or maybe the secret knock is paying $1000 more for Final Cut Pro.

Thanks.

->> Sounds like the problem is the framing rate. Try converting the 5D 30 fps to 29.97 in MPEGStreamclip and try converting the Nikon 24 fps to 23.98.

Also, make sure whatever you're converting to is something FCE will recognize. FCE is limited in its choice of video codecs.

->> Since Nikon footage is 24 fps and FCE doesn't recognize 24 nor 23.98 fps, you'll have to convert to 25 fps or 29.97 fps as Apple Intermediate Codec.

Open MPEGStreamclip. From dropdown menu, choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Set Quality slider to 100. Set frame rate to 29.97 or 25. If it's just for the web, go with 25.

In Frame Size, make sure "unscaled" is checked. Leave the rest as is and click "Make Movie."

In FCE, click on your timeline to select it, go to Sequence --> Settings or Cmd-0 and choose Apple Intermediate Codec 720p25 or 720p30.

Import your converted footage and place in timeline. You should not see a render bar.

If I missed anything, please add.
