The NCAA and Personal Blogs

->> Is there an NCAA rule about showing current student athlete images on your personal blog? Is a blog considered being different then your personal website? I’m asking this question because my main source of income has come from shooting multiple sports for 2 athletic conferences that frown on individual websites.

They are constantly reminding me of the consequences of placing current student athletes with eligibility remaining on anything other than their respected school's websites. I ask this question because I would love to start my blog over again. Thanks!

->> I always ask: how is a typical blog any different from a newspaper?

Still, you can't bite the hands that feed you. Usually, 'athlete eligibility' is a red herring thrown up by schools/conferences that are just trying to protect their own economic interest in print sales.

->> Even if there is no NCAA rule, if your main source of income is from the conferences that are complaining about it I would go along with their wishes just to be safe.

Whats more important to you, having a blog or keeping your biggest clients happy ?

You can very well go back to those SID's or compliance officers and show them exactly what the NCAA regulations do or don't say, and be completely in the right, but they still have the right not stop using you regardless simply because they don't like what your doing.

My rule of thumb is don't do anything that makes the client frown. Instead keep them smiling and mailing checks.
