->> I'm headed on a trip and need some advise on bringing my gear on the plane. I will be traveling with a suitcase and (2) 1550 pelican cases.
One 1550 case with 2 camera bodies and lenses. The other holds a water housing a 1 camera body.
Is it safe to check one of the pelican cases? I was thinking the case with the water housing.
Any advise?
thanks! |

->> Safe - from theft or destruction ? The pelicans are one of the strongest cases made. I have a larger one - 3 bodies, 6 lenses, flashes, and other gack that has been shipped all over the world with me and stood up better than I have.
I use a couple of the "approved" locks which are a mere slow down should some one want in.
Theft is a concern. Do not have J N Photo Ltd in big letters, "FRAGILE ELECTRONICS !!!" or other give aways that there is expensive gear inside.
If you have to check/ship make sure that your carry on has a minimum of amount of gear to let you shoot should the checked bag disappear.
I'm sure Fish will wade in soon with his ideas and he does know his stuff.

->> I don't know anything about the starter pistol trick. Locks have to be TSA approved, meaning that you have the combination to open them but at the same time there is sort of a master key that will open them for airport screeners, security etc.
If you put a non TSA lock on then they will cut them off, delay your bag and generally go out of their way to cause you grief.
None of the TSA locks are super tough but they discourage a casual attempt to open the case.
And I suspect there are a lot of "master keys" floating around.
I usually try and bypass airline baggage and fedex my gear ahead of myself. Higher cost (I build it into my rates) but for me more piece of mind.
