FYI: Beauty Dish cases
Robert Longhitano, Photographer

->> FYI:

A while ago there was a discussion about cases to transport and or store beauty dishes.

I found some links on the Mola Blog:

http://mola-light.com/blog/?p=57

I love the Christmas wreath case idea

->> That is right up there with buying last year's snowboard cases for lightstands. Better balance, better cushioning and, oh yes, much cheaper! Got mine for $20 at the local ski supply store.

->> This probably makes me a redneck, but I put my beauty dishes in a drum case when I travel. You can get them is just about any width or depth. Mine's made of heavy plastic and is deep enough to hold two dishes, or one and a bunch of other stuff. I've used it for years and the only casualty was on this shoot http://briansmith.com/#/PORTFOLIOS/ATHLETES/20 when Jose Canseco's cat had her way with the foam inside...and yes...there's probably a joke in that somewhere...

->> Thought I would add to this post. Adorama has a nice case for beauty dishes on sale now for $75. Despite the "Flashpoint" logo, it looks similar to Tenba or Lightware and seems well built, with a somewhat rigid internal structure. surrounded by padding. Probably wouldn't ship it or check it naked or , but for the price its a great car case.

->> Slightly off topic...Is anyone making their own beauty dishes? I'd really appreciate knowing how it's done. I keep going by those big shiny bowls at Sam's Club and I've been tempted to give it a shot.

Thanks

->> A SKB double steel drum case is a perfect fit for a 22" Mola Demi beauty dish with mount. A "sleeve" for a grid made out of coroplast from a local plastics shop brings the level even with the top of the case.

->> Jon,
I made my own. I essentially used the same parts and method that I found on David Tejada's blog. However, I couldn't find a shallow dish so I decided to see if a "shotgun" beauty dish would work. I works well. Here is mine:

I have since also added an aluminum bracket arm to take all the weight off of the flash head.

I'm not sure if that is the Kacey to which Steve is referring. Kacey also makes a pretty nice and affordable beauty dish with adapters for all flashes including speedlites. He also has a paint pole adapter that enables a paint pole to be used as a hand held boom. For the record, my only affiliation with Kacey is that I am a customer.
