Traveling with a tripod

->> I may have missed a previous thread on here about this subject - if so, I apologize for creating another travel thread.
I've seen from a few of the threads, that some people have traveled with a tripod as a carry on item in side of their carry on bag - can a tripod be carried on in a tripod carry on type bag or will I be required to check the tripod.
Thanks for any help in clearing this up

| ->> I pack a large Manfrotto at the bottom of my main checked bag wrapped in towels. Everything else in my bag is piled on top of it, and so far it's made several trips, some overseas, unscathed. I don't even try to carry a tripod on the plane; what will I do if the TSA agent says "No way". Don't even want to go there. I tremble enough having a big 'ole pano bracket in my carry-on photo backpack. So far they've let it go, even in Frankfurt, Germany, where the TSAs do not smile. |

| ->> I've never had a problem whatsoever packing my Gitzo Carbon Fiber Traveller and/or a Superclamp plus Ballhead in my carry-on bag through airports including EWR, LIH, SFO, Miami, Montego Bay, SXM, Las Vegas, Bermuda, just to name a few. |

->> I traveled to Costa Rica a few years ago. I decided at the last minute to pack my Gitzo in my checked bag instead of trying to carry it on. Just for grins I asked the TSA agent at the airport if I could have brought it on board, and he said, 'No problem'.
On the way back from Costa Rica, I asked the TSA agent (it was a US TSA agent) the same question. She said, 'Absolutely not and it would be confiscated'.
So, the answer seems to be, how lucky do you feel?
I break it down and it packs nicely in my checked bag. And I keep the ball head with me with my camera gear. |
