Jim Marshall is a Bad Ass

->> Hello everyone. I just finished reading legendary rock and roll photographer Jim Marshall's new book "Trust" (http://www.sportsshooter.com/education/book_profile.html?id=776) and there is so much I want to say about it.
Many of us here in the Bay Area are fortunate that Jim is such a local fixture. We have had a chance to meet him and hear his stories in person as he sips from a glass of Macallan 10. Being able to combine personal experiences with Jim (http://www.sportsshooter.com/funpix_view.html?id=8515) with the words in his new book is an educational experience.
Sure, the pictures- as always from Jim- are amazing. But what got me about this book was the running dialogue he has with us- the reader- about the moments when he shot the images and about how he conducted his business.
Marshall talks about the TRUST he had with his subjects:
"I don't sign shit either, I own all of my photographs and no one I've shot, not Dylan, not Miles, not Cash, has ever complained about how my pictures of them have been used."
Later in the book is my favorite quote from Marshall that he said when talking about Thelonious Monk:
"I pretty much have every roll of film I shot... I looked after my negatives and now they look after me."
This pretty much says it all. At age 72 Marshall is reaping the rewards for being such a brilliant businessman. He lives a comfortable life in San Francisico because he owns his images and refused to sign a bad deal. EVER. We can all learn from him.
Thanks Jim! |

I told my wife if this guy does not hit on you in 30 seconds you are being insulted. He did . He looked at me and said "you I know you " I said yeah Jim we know each other. I said we just got married he said stay for dinner which he paid for and come back to where I am staying I will give you a print. We get to his place I said Jim I got a problem , My wife wants Jimi I want Janis he slaps me and says take two. MY wife for years what say to guests want to see my wedding pictures and then show people Jimi and Janis, by Jim Marshall. |

->> David--
Cool story.
Jeff--
He made some legendary amps, too. Oh wait, that also was another Jim Marshall.
A Leica brochure from a prior millennium had a cool image of Marshall's Leica M4 that had once been black but was then mostly brass. Lots of mileage on that camera. |

| ->> Slightly off topic, but Jim Marshall is a great name for a rock and roll photographer. As Steve mentioned, Jim Marshall is the name of the creator of Marshall amplifiers... some of the most legendary units in rock music! |

->> Fish--
That's the photo and the camera.
Just another aspect of life gone by. I doubt that any NIkon D3 or Canon EOS 1D Mk III could ever exude the mileage or wear its age as well as Marshall's M4 complete with a Leicavit. Relatively speaking, cameras are now disposable. But that's a different story.
Thanks for finding the image online. |

I remembered seeing Jim Marshall's M4 years ago and thinking "wow this camera has less paint than my F3"
Sadly my 5D bodies won't last any where near as long as Jim's M4 or my F3 |
