400/2.8 focus motor question

->> Shooting HS soccer yesterday with 400/2.8 on my Mark IIn. The focus would snap into place, but the lens was making a sound like the motor kept rolling for maybe 2 full seconds. A1servo was fine and shots remained in focus, but this noise of a running motor was bugging me.
I have not noticed this before. Has anyone else experienced this? Advice? send to CPS? I've got games next week/weekend

->> Which 400/2.8 model do you have?
This summer mine (400/2.8 II) just stopped focusing. CPS said they do not fix them anymore and so I started searching. Three repair shops later it sits a Pro Photo Repair in CA. I paid for a focus motor rebuild at the rate of $1499.99 back in late August early September. As of a week or so last e-mail communications I was up to a bill of an additional $700.00 or so. The tech said they are still working and I need to just wait.
They are supposed to be a great repair shop but their communication is not always the best. Honestly cold care less about how they communicate if they can fix it.
Lest hope that it is not as serious a problem for you. If it is start saving it wont be cheap. However $2500-$3000 or so to get it back good as new is still a deal.
Best of Luck !! |

| ->> Do you have IS turned on? The only time I hear this sound is when IS turned on. |

| ->> You have the IS version. Canon still repairs IS versions of that lens. |

->> Any reason why you have the IS turned on while shooting soccer? Were your shutter speeds slower than 1/500s?
Check out this Web site: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/lens/index.html
Quoted from this site:
[Canon IS Lenses were the world’s first removable SLR lenses to feature a special mechanism that corrects camera shake with technology rather than technique. These lenses, which are essentially Canon EF lenses with a built-in Image Stabilizer (IS) — Canon’s original system — greatly expanded the range of practical uses for handheld shooting. Even today, Canon IS Lenses remain at the forefront of camera shake correction technology.
“Camera shake” is movement of the camera while capturing an image on imaging device or film. A certain amount of camera movement is inevitable during handheld shooting, and the resulting blur is greater at longer focal lengths and lower shutter speeds."]
I've always interpreted this to mean that IS isn't intended for high speed action photography (other than Mode 2 for horizontal panning). Maybe I'm wrong.
Personally, I prefer to not have the IS motors pushing, pulling, buzzing, whirring, etc., while my camera was trying for an AF solution, especially when what they're trying to accomplish is of no value to me.
The noise you describe is exactly the noise my EF 400 f/2.8L IS makes when the IS is accidentally turned on. When I bump the IS button to the "I" position I instantly know it when I hear this noise.
Could it be it's been making this noise all along and you are just now noticing it? |

->> Thanks Dennis - I had never noticed the noise before - had the lens almost 2 yrs now. I will break it out tonight and see if it is the IS.. I called CPS and they advised it is most likely the IS motor/gyro and unless it is a severe grinding noise not to worry (it is not a severe grinding noise)
SS speeds moved below 1/500 as I was trying to keep the iso low as the lights came on shooting in Av mode..... so I generally keep the IS on. Its been set it and forget it.
Really have not noticed before - it was distinct on Saturday - our soccer games are not well attended - so not much background noise :) and I believe I would have noticed before, but that's not to say I didn't.
Thanks again
