Your idea seems good but it probably won't support the camera and keep it in place very well.
I did a few backboard remotes last season and always used two arms with one clamped to the camera's magic arm to hold it in place so the camera doesn't move. The camera still moved on occasion with a powerful dunk. |

Two magic arms is the best way to go, one to hold the camera and the second, with two superclamps, to provide additional support to the magic arm with the camera on it.
Don't forget safety cables, make sure the whole thing is cabled in and tight. Using the camera strap as your safety won't cut it.
Someone at one of our basketball games a couple years back didn't have their backboard remote secured correctly and it actually fell during the game, the only thing that saved it from hitting the floor was the camera strap. They had to stop play so it could be removed. As a result there is pretty much a ban conference wide on glass remotes now. |

The base would hold the front of the lens up and the other end would be clamped down..
Like I said, this was just an idea. |
