"A perpetual recession for papers"

->> Forbes.com article:
http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/18/newspapers-advertising-rick-edmonds-poynte...
says newspapers spent more than $1 billion less on reporting and editing from 2007 to the end of 2009.
The final graf was pretty chilling: "The math is that when you cut a bunch of reporters from your newsroom in June, that continues to show up as a savings in January. But if advertising revenues continue to fall, you will have to cut again. My prediction is that in the coming six to nine months, ad revenues will continue to fall and newspapers will be forced to cut yet again." |

| ->> I'm really curious what journalism students are doing with newspapers and magazines cutting back like this. Are students planning to continue on, change majors, learn different skills? What are the J-schools telling students about the job market and how to get jobs when they graduate? Of what value is a journalism degree if the average citizen is producing the photographs and blogging in the stories for websites? My question to students is: How are you and your schools adapting to the demise of print media? |

| ->> Been wondering that myself, Margaret. I see alot of members here with the student/intern tag. If the situation looks bleak for those of us that have been around. What can those of you expect? |

->> As an adjunct journalism professor many of my more gifted students are focusing on entrepreneurial journalism and have started their own ventures... from simply freelancing (for a wide range of clients) to even starting their own news websites.
They're realistic about the difficulties facing them, but they are also optimistic and excited to leave their mark on the changing journalism world. |
