What is it with some Togs?

->> Was covering a Horse Racing meet recently in the UK and was setting up a multimax when I saw another tog putting one down. Asked the simple question "What channel are you shooting on?"
Only to be met by "Why? What for?" this wasn't an amature snapper, but an experienced tog. It's not the first time I've experienced this from some togs. anyone else? |

| ->> It's fear! Straight up fear of losing what little piece if the industry you have left. It's everywhere. It's on every sideline, dugout, corner and hole. People are sort of afraid when they meet someone new and they feel threatened by them and they shun them and become stand offish. I shoot the sidelines of SDSU ball. This is my first year after shooting years of High School and little league. I was finally called up by the majors if you will. And I was definitely not greeted with open arms. Thankfully I knew a few togs and also I am a VERY out going and friendly person by nature and I don't come off as a threat. We all feel it or have felt it at one time or another. Some people react much worse than other while some couldn't give a Nikon strap. I look at it this way, I'm here your here, we're all here lets have some fun and produce some stunning images. Although there are the holdouts no matter where you go. They just refuse to become part of the fold and like the fringe. This is my grab on it and I could be way off but I think there's a bit of truth to what i'm saying everywhere. |

->> Please don't refer to me as a Tog.
Nick hit it. Fear. Then again some people/photogs are just unfriendly.

->> Nick nailed it. Several years ago I had a photographer rail on how I was going to wreck his business. He tore me a new hole for 15 solid minutes. 2/3 of the way through the championship with 'his' team down by an 'insurmountable' lead he packs up and leaves. Well his team came back to take the state title and bright and early Sunday morning I got a call at home asking if I had a jube or team shot with the cup. His early exit left him without the money shot and the editors were pissed.
Fast forward 3 years.......
I bump into this same shooter at a game I'm shooting and not being one to hold a grudge, I strike up a conversation. Ten minutes into the conversation I ask "so who you shooting for?" his response was "never mind" AND HE TURNS OVER HIS CREDENTIAL so I won't see the company's name on it. Wears it like that for the rest of the game.
Fear is an incredible force.
BTW Around here "togs" are caught using clams and served broiled with lemon pepper and a good dry white. Tasty! |

Take Tylenol for any headaches... Midol for any cramps.

->> Some people are insecure, threatened or just not nice, and it looks like you found one of those people.
But, the situation might have been different if you where clearer when you asked your question. Something like, "Hey, just so I'm not stepping on your signal, what channel are your Pocket Wizards on?" |

->> I think it was at the SS Luau or maybe at some other conference, but there was a picture of 4 photographers shooting with 400's. They were each over the other person's shoulder so they ALL COULD GET A GOOD SHOT. I think it was for the Olympics on some field event or hurdles, but these guys worked together. It was amazing how virtually no sacrifice allows everyone to do their job.
I really wish I could find it because it illustrated the value of cooperating in this business. |

->> Once upon a time I was a photo editor at a newspaper and I was looking for more freelancers to help out with assignments me or the current guys couldn't get done. I met many photographers who were rude and arrogant before I got a chance to spit out where I was from. Needless to say they didn't get any jobs from me.
Sure times are tough, but you never know who you are being a jerk to. It might be someone looking to give you work....or someone who will post about you on a message board. |

->> Hey Paul, I think we've all had run-in's with less than polite photographers, and that's unfortunate.
That being said, being polite to other photographers might be the best business practice of all. We all have shoots come up that might not fit our schedule and need to refer someone else for the job. I know it's helped me, and I've helped others this same way. |

->> 'Togs' is obviously a British thing, we all use the name along with 'snappers'. Still amuses me that you guys have 'fanny packs' thats a whole different thing on this side of the pond!!!
I wasn't rude to him at all, just let him wander off. |
