5"X7" Photo printer suggestions?

->> We outsource most of our small print work to labs, but on occasion we get a customer who needs small prints quickly or on location.
To fill these rush orders, we recently purchased an HP photosmart A536 which will print up to 5"X7" photos. We tested is out and are returning it. The sharpness and color of the prints was lacking to say the least.
For larger prints and posters we use an Epson Stylus Pro 7800 which produces amazingly beautiful prints. I'm not looking for anything that good, but something close would be acceptable....
Does anyone have some recommendations for a small portable photo printer that that goes up to 5"X7" ?
Thanks,
Phil |

->> Mitsubishi CP9550DW. Fast, good quality prints, 3.5x5 to 6x9, dye sub. Can't tell you how many prints we've made on it, but the heads are still fine. I did have to replace the cutter last year.
A couple of things about dye subs in general. The color gamut will never match up to what you are getting from the 7800. Whites and blown highlights will (90% of the time) have a slight magenta cast. 99% of the public won't see it and I have mine tuned to hold magenta back 5 points. That seems to do the job.
Call me if you want more details you know the number ;) |

->> I use the Sony printer. It's lightning fast and the color and resolution are fantastic. No other dye sub holds a candle to the Sony dye subs.
The key thing to compare is the blackness of your prints. Shinkos do not print as strong a black tone as a Sony print.
I highly recommend printing and calibrating you Sony. It has helped us a great deal on both our printers. I do not use printer-based color management. |
