Stressful Jobs That Pay Badly

->> 8. Commercial Photographer
Median pay: $43,600
% who say their job is stressful: 100%
The job may sound glamorous, but commercial photographers, who capture models, merchandise and landscapes for books, advertisements and catalogs, have to contend with long days, picky personalities and demanding deadlines -- sometimes withstanding precarious positions just to get that perfect shot.
"One time I was doing a portrait of two guys who owned a construction company. The next thing I knew I was standing on this little catwalk under the Throgs Neck bridge [in New York City], dangling above the water because it gave me this great angle," said Gale Zucker, a photographer from Branford, Conn.

| ->> Its not the walking out onto the catwalk that is the stressful part, its the not knowing if next time you walk onto that catwalk there will be another person there doing it for free LOL |

| ->> I love polls like that, especially by CNN or Yahoo. Most of the time they're so out of touch and irrelevant, it resembles something more like the Onion would write (Oops, I mentioned the Onion). I would say most of the jobs in that poll really are stressful, but photographer.... and producer?!? Especially producer, wtf? |

->> I think the thing that made me chuckle about the list is that they call these stressful jobs, but for the people who do them; they do it because they enjoy it, the money isn't their first consideration, and some of the jobs on the list are actually important in society.
Teacher, counselor, therapist, probation officer, nursing home director, curator, fundraiser, social worker. All jobs that if they didn't exist, society might find it tough to function without them. And the people who have those jobs realize their importance.
Producer, events coordinator, music director; and yes even photographer, not so important. The jobs occasionally make life better in their own little ways, but even as a photojournalist I'm not going to pretend the world is going to suddenly stop spinning if I got fired or quit. There are days it can be important, but there are a lot of days where it's mundane. Yes a war photojournalist or a social issues photog is important to illuminate the human condition. But for any photog to actually say its "stressful" in the same way some of those other occupations are, that person probably needs a reality check.
Even on the worst day for a photog, probably doesn't compare to a therapist who may be trying to help a teenager who's close to hurting them self physically. When I have a "stressful" day I remind myself I'm not digging ditches or checking up on convicted felons. |

->> Wouldn't a war photographer be more stressful than a commercial photographer? I mean if you're dodging bullets and having scrapes with your life on a daily basis, I would think that would be more stressful. The potential of kidnapping and blown up by bombs...
I don't know how much soldiers make, but I would venture to guess the benefits are good, but the pay may not be that great. I could be wrong. What about dodging bullets on a daily basis and leaving your family behind. That's gotta be more stressful than any of those jobs they listed. I could be wrong. I'm just saying. |

I would say lower enlisted soldiers' lives are definitely stressful. They definitely don't make much money and just about everything they do is scrutinized by their sergeants. |

| ->> The military is an underpaid job for sure, no matter what your rank. I know, I grew up in a military family. The benefits are however not that bad. Medical and dental plus food and other staples are usually cheaper at the PX and Commissary and a pretty good retirement plan if you stay in long enough. However it's no fun not seeing your dad for a year or more several times during his career. Would I trade it for anything else if I had it to do over ? No! I'm proud of my father and the service he gave to his country. Stressful ? Yes of course. I'll tell you my top four stressful jobs, and IMHO no other job even comes close. Military personnel under fire, Fire Fighter, Police Officer, Surgeon. My 2 cents. |
