Code replacement

->> Is there anyone in the San Diego area that would be willing to spend a few minutes with me in person and go over code replacement? I have read everything we have here and tried myself and I can't get it to work. I'm just 10 times more confused now. Sorry it's not one of my strengths. I'm on a MBP and a MAC Pro at the office I can spring for lunch even. I'm in North County and I REALLY need to get onboard with this. Thank you SS so much for this and so much more.

->> Nick,
You might be overcomplicating it. Go to http://code.stonepix.com/ and set up your codes...ie NCAA Football. Set home team and visitor team and download.
Open PhotoMechanic and Go Edit>Set Code Replacements>Add
Add the Text file you just downloaded. The text file shows your codes for specific players.
Now when you go to caption, type in the code to put in players name.
ie:
tpfl15 would give my Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
You have to use the ''
Hope that helps...if anymore questions just ask.

->> Are you using Firefox ?
I had problems with downloading the files with Firefox .
They wouldn't work so I tried Safari and they worked fine.
Just wondering.... |

| ->> Something it took me 2 games to figure out about code replacement: If you have your captions set (for example) with tpuxxn to represent the player in the photo, when you start putting numbers in place of xx, if you first delete xx and then enter a 2-digit number (say 27), the replacement happens the moment you put in the first of your numbers (the 2 in this case), so I was getting the wrong names (player with jersey #2 instead of player with jersey #27, or player with jersey #3 instead of player with jersey #36) but I didn't realize that this was the exact nature of the error. I just figured the roster was wrong. When the same thing was happening for my second game, after I'd carefully checked the downloaded roster file against the team roster, I finally had my aha! moment and realized I couldn't delete the xx until after I'd put in the player's number, which in effect put off the replacement until all digits had been entered (and the xx's had then been deleteed)......Clear as mud? (my explanation that is. Code replacement is downright priceless!) |

->> Russ - In my experience, I just type in the following string: tpnd7n and and it doesn't produce "Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen (7)" until I hit the second "" character. I'm pretty sure it's the second "" character that invokes the code replacement, not the numbers themselves. As long as you don't have the second "", nothing should happen.
I just tried the above to confirm, and I could pretty much type anything I wanted to after the first "" and nothing happened until I typed the closing "".
Do you have tpuxxn in your IPTC Stationary Pad? If so, I wouldn't do this since sometimes I use a different string than tpuxxn, like when I don't need the team's name (as in when more then one play from a team appears in a shot: "Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen (7) and wide receiver Robby Parrish (82) scramble for a fumble...", the second code replacement being pnd82n. In addition, you'll have to replace the "u" with the other team anyways. |

| ->> Well Dennis, once again you've given me something to think about. I'm using back slashes to define my codes, and I do recall (as you've said here) that it's not until the second back-slash is typed that the replacement occurs. I've been embedding the full code (tpuxxn) in my IPTC for every captioned photo, then replacing the xx with player number. Your suggestion of holding off on this, or at least part of this, makes sense, and at the very least I can leave off the ending back-slash until I edit for each individual shot. Thanks! |

| ->> Your fingers will become very accustomed to typing (in my case) the letters "tph" or "tpv" (Home and Visiting teams) and I imaging this is even quicker than inserting a cursor where you want to start the numbers. for home team player #9, you just learn to type tph9n (plus the slashes) and it fills out the rest. As Dennis pointed out, I use simply "h" or "v" or "pv9" liberally, because I like to write good captions that are not pre-formatted (besides the date, outcome of the game, location, etc.) |

->> Hey, this is weird. All the backslashes in my post disappeared. Sometimes the SS board is odd, to say the least.
Needless to say, go back to my post and insert a backslash in between each set of quotation marks......
I agree with Dustin. I am so used to Mike's code replacement files that I don't even think about typing tpnd7n or nd7 or whatever.
Speaking of Mike's service, I need to go over there and give him some of my money (and suggest others do the same). I cannot even begin to estimate the hours and hours his code replacement generator has saved me.
Now if he'd only add NCAA hoops. I know, Jason Watson has an app to cover NCAA hoops on his site at http://www.jasonowatson.com/code/ , but I wonder why Mike has omitted such a popular sport from his otherwise amazing site? |

->> I create my own files, takes about 15 minutes for a basketball team, 45 minutes for a football team.
I do each person 3 ways:
(I cover University of Florida sports)
/UF15/ (changes to) Florida senior quarterback Tim Tebow
/uf15/ (changes to) Tim Tebow
/fu15/ (changes to) TebowTim (I use this for renaming files, YYMMDD_LastFirst_1234_Photog)
Just type everything in a word document or text editor, save as a ".txt" file.
Make sure to hit the tab key after the code, before the replacement, like this:
uf15 Tim Tebow
fu15 TebowTim
UF15 Florida senior quarterback Tim Tebow |

->> oops, the tab spaces didn't show up...
Should look like this, minus the underscores:
uf15_____Tim Tebow
fu15_____TebowTim
UF15_____Florida senior quarterback Tim Tebow |

| ->> You can even "add" your own info in the text editor box where the codes show up (Text Edit, Text Wrangler, whatever app you use). For instance, a friend of mine who shoots a lot of hockey has a generic "skates with the puck" and "waits for a pass" and "makes a pass" text and code pre-made for file or stock-type photos of players that are in action, but not necessarily engaged with an opponent. You could expand this to any sport (dribbles down the court, pitches/fields/bats, you get the idea). My friend also has codes made up by period/quarter in the text edit box, again, to eliminate as many keystrokes as possible to save time. |
