I need a time killer

->> So, I'm two weeks into recovery after a work-related fall with another month of time off to look forward to. With my new broken wrist I'm not allowed to return to work until the cast comes off, lift more than five pounds, can't grip a camera, and am about up to my ears in Law & Order reruns.
Sooooo, I'd appreciate any time wasting / continuing ed /good book suggestions any cares to offer. If I was clairvoyant, I'd have set up the broken wrist to coincide with a McNally workshop but I'm not much in the psychic ability department. |

->> there are a ton of useless time killers but ive always been one for learning new things. i used to always keep the game show network on the other room so that i would always be over hearing trivia shows, etc. needless to say i am full of random knowledge.
if it were me id get a lynda.com account and sit down with their thousands of video tutorials and learn something useful. a new program, etc.

->> John Sanford "Prey" series of books. About a Minneapolis homicide investigator. Great books that will keep you up at night trying to finish one more chapter, if not the whole book.
Also, Stephen Hunter and his books about a Viet Nam era sniper, Bob the Nailer. Good books, intense at times and addicting if you like action novels. |

->> If you like sci-fi, read Lord of the Rings or Terry Brooks Shannara series. Those are big, thick epic fantasy stories that'll eat up a chunk of your time. If you REALLY want to eat up a chunk of time, dig into Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, 12 thick books and counting.
Other great sci-fi is Dan Simmons' award-winning novel Hyperion which I gave to a co-worker and it frightened her so much she had to stop reading it at night. It's really good, reminiscent of Cantebury Tales. Simmons' Olympos and Illium are a sci-fi take on the Trojan War and are also excellent and will make you think.
Mark Twain's Roughing It is also good, and I also admit a fondness for some of Al Franken's books.
Hulu.com has some great old TV shows and movies on it as well, all free.
Hope this helps,
-Ron- |

->> Begin studying to pass the Series 7 and Series 66 - you could make some more good money if you pass or least you would learn a lot about a subject that most people don't really understand....
It could turn into a lucrative career incase something ever happens to the photography career....
If nothing else, you could learn how to make yourself a little more money....
Get well soon bud!!! |

->> Wordscraper (like scrabble) on Facebook is fun.
Not sure what your favorite authors/books are but:
I just finished: The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks and really liked it.
Getting ready to read: The Associate by John Grisham and looking forward to reading his new one: Ford County
Mitch Album has a new one that is high on my list: Have a Little Faith.
Michael Lewis has a new book about football: The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game.
Larry Bird: When the Game Was Ours
Andre Agassi: Open
Stephen King: Under the Dome
Dean Koontz: Breathless
Michael Crichton: Pirate Latitudes
James Patterson (one of my favorite authors) has a new one: I, Alex Cross..and one coming out in Dec .. Witch and Wizard
Then there are the political books: Sara Palin, Bill O'Reilly, Edward Kennedy, Glenn Beck etc ...
So many good books out there. A very inexpensive way to pass the time if you get them from the library.
Enjoy your downtime.

->> Podcasts - They are free (except they sometimes ask for donations)
1. Hardcore History - Dan Carlin gives gripping talks on a variety of subjects. (Wins my award for best Podcast) The latest one, a whopping 4 part series called Ghosts of the Ostfront, was one of his best.
2. Astronomy Cast - Fraser Cain & Dr. Pamela Gay. Great audio show (and education) on astronomy.
3. Escape Pod - Stephen Eley's show on Science Fiction short stories from various writters. Not all stories are good, but I can do a whole thread on my favorite shows.
(Stories I liked included, Union Dues, Infestation, How I Mounted Goldie . . . , Edward Bear, Flaming Marshmallows, Astromonkeys, Save Me Piz, Niels Bohr and the Sleeping Dane, Conversions With and About my Electric Toothbrush, Mayfly, The Giving Plague. -- There are others, your taste on what you like will vary)
4. NPR - Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me.
5. NPR - This American Life.
6. Common Sense - Dan Carlin again, this time with a political show that can get the left AND the right mad.
7. The Heaven series - Story by Mur Lafferty
8. Playing for Keeps - Story by Mur Lafferty
---Most current shows can be downloaded using iTunes. Older archive shows can sometimes be found on the shows web site. |

->> Take all your old CDs/DVDs of digital photo files, copy them back onto your computer hard drive, then batch caption them in Photoshop Bridge, making sure to include keywords, compile a list of said files (in an Excel-type spreadsheet) while re-burning them all onto DVDs (in duplicate, of course), and carefully store the resulting discs in three-ring notebook binders.
And do it neatly.
If you have had a career of any appreciable length, this will take you months -- nay, years.
It's working for me!
Anal-retentively yours,
DRC |
