Matt Kartozian, Photographer

->> I have a pocket wizard question. I will be shooting some action handheld with a wizard in the hotshoe. I want that PW to trigger a set lights and a remote camera also on PWs. Can it be done? Thanks

->> If you want the remote to sync with the same set of lights there are ways to do it and increase your odds. There are lots of threads here on that and Robert Beck had a good how-to on it.

->> My experience with pocket wizards and triggering a remote camera in Sync with the external strobes. In my case Speedotron 2401 packs. Because of shutter lag or something like that, the shutter speed was slow. I shoot action indoors at 1/640 sec. When I trigger two cameras with my strobes, I hard wire the camera together. This is the only thing that has worked for me. Any shutter spped slower than 1/400 is to slow for my work.

->> I believe the question you are asking is can you have the lights, your remote, & your handheld all fire off the same strobes. The answer is yeas but it is a pain in the ass.

You have to treat your hendheld as a remote and trigger it with a PW as well.

You can not, and this is probably what you are looking for, put a PW in the hotshoe of your handheld and have it trigger you remote, and lights (for both cam's) at the same time.

I usually set up my remote at one end, and shoot at the other. This way I can sink my lights to my remote at one end and also have my handehld sync with the lights at the other.

->> Richard, yes that is what I am trying to do. But I want all to fire at the same time. This is for a race with everything shooting the same small area at the same time, maybe 50 feet square.

Thanks everyone for the input so far.

->> Matt, so this is what you will have to do to make it work. I have PW PlusII's I use for this because they have a great setting that allows you to sync strobes to remotes without having to figure out the camera lag

Cam 1 (handheld) - PW PlusII attached via Remote Cable

Cam 2 (remote) - same as above

Trigger PW - I would put this in my pocket and attach a the chord of your choice from Michael Bass Designs (
http://tiny.cc/mbd ), and attach the button to your camera how you see fit. Set your camera to use the AF button to focus and then use the new MBD button to trigger everything. To see how to set up PW PlusII's in Relay Mode, which is what you will need to do, hit up this link http://tiny.cc/pwpii

Enjoy, Rick D
