BP-511

->> Hey guys,
Back in '03 or '04 I picked up the original Digital Rebel. I stocked up on BP-511 batteries and had no problems.
In '07 I picked up the Digital Rebel XT and it obviously doesn't use the BP-511's so I stocked up on those batteries and have no problems.
Last year I had a shoot where I needed to borrow a 40D and figured I would use my BP-511's that have been sitting in my drawer with their plastic covers on them (b/c I knew I would need them at some point)....I charged them up and when I put them in the 40D they said they were dead and would only last about 5 minutes then power down the camera.
I figured it was an issue with my friend's camera, so he loaned me his batteries and I did my shoot.
Now last week I picked up a 50D and figured I could use my 5 BP-511s that I have hung onto. Nope, same issue as when I used my friend's 40D. They immediately show low battery in the display, and after I shoot a test shot or two the display starts blinking saying they are dying and then that's it....power off.
Four of the BP-511s I have are original Canon and 1 is an off brand. I have a hard time believing that all 5 died at the same time. Is it that they are too old? I did use them a ton when I had the original Rebel, however they worked beautifully when I used to use them shooting NHL in the chilly arenas. I have made sure to take good care of them b/c I knew I would be getting a 40 or 50 at some point in the future.
Has anyone else experienced this? I find similar issues when I Google this problem, but they are very few, and I wanted to explain my situation in detail. Thanks in advance for your input.

->> I should also mention that using the BP-511A that came with my 50D body.......the camera works perfectly. I have a big shoot on Wednesday and I am going to pick up another BP-511A (OEM) tonight, but I wanted to know what you guys thought before I just turn those 511s in for recycling.

| ->> I think they recommend storing them almost drained, not full. Maybe it damages the capacity? |

->> I had not ever heard that before. That would be interesting.....and a bit annoying.....as you know those things aren't cheap....and to have to toss 5 of them, well a little frustrating.

| ->> Shop for them on Ebay. I have bought some off of Ebay for around $5 each and the performance has been better than the Canon BP-511 batteries. |

| ->> I am leery of getting anymore BP-511's - I am going to stick with the BP-511A's. I am guessing there are off brands for that too. |

->> Good not-too-technical, semi-entertaining read on rechargeable batteries in this article:

->> The Slate article pretty much confirms what has always been my thinking about rechargeable batteries - that they have a finite lifespan that is only marginally dependent upon how heavily the batteries are used.
For years I have used BP-511 batteries from sterlingtek.com with great success, and I'm about due for a new batch. When I get new batteries I write the purchase date on the side of them with a Sharpie; this practice confirms that the practical lifespan of a BP-511 is rarely more than three years. |

->> Thanks for that Slate article....at least it lets me know why all 5 of my batteries went dead on me.
I picked up some new 511A's last night so I'm good to go now for another few years!
Oh, we also took the battery out of our laptop while it's plugged in.....great article. Thanks Matt.

->> I'm digging up this old thread because it's about time to replace most of my BP-511s. For years I bought them from sterlingtek.com and had good very luck with the company and their batteries, but I wanted to see if there are any new developments.
Is it still a good place to buy replacement batteries? Are there any other good places to buy them for around $12-$15 each? |
