Canon 400mm f2.8 Problem

->> Hi All,
My Canon 400mm f2.8L IS started giving me problems yesterday. When I go to shoot vertical, the Aperture goes to 00 and I get an Err 01. I assume there is a problem with the contacts. The Canon CPS repair center was once a 5 minute drive from my house, but they have since closed it. So before I spend hundreds of bucks to ship it half way accross the country, I was wondering if anyone had any experience/advice with this problem?
Thanks, |

->> If you slightly twist the body relative to the lens when in portrait does this go away?
I think an out of round locking pin hole on the lens mount and/or a bent/loose locking pin on the body could do this. I had a high mileage 1D classic that when I mounted a older 300/2.8L on it and flipped it to vertical about 1/2 of the time they would quit communicating. If I rotated the body ever so slightly, all was good. Didn't happen with the lens mounted on any other body, nor did it happen with any other lens mounted on that body.
I would try the lens on other bodies before sending it off, as it could be the locking pin on the body. |

->> I had the same issue some time back...i can't remember now what the fix was as they replaced both the mount on my lens and also the mount on the body....but I remember it worked on other bodies with the old lens mount...so prob just an issue with your camera mount...

->> see if you have the IS turned on, I think if it's in paning mode (2) this can happen. I'm not 100% sure but I think you cannot pan vertically. ?

| ->> I had this same issue before on a 300mm 2.8 and it was the contacts. They had become dirty and I was advised to get a rubber (eraser to our US friends) and rub it on the contacts to clean them. Once I did that is worked perfectly. |

->> David's idea is a good one, however be sure to be careful to remove any little bits of rubber (eraser) from the contacts and out of the back of your lens. If you do this to your camera, do it with the lens mount facing downward and be sure none of the rubber bits fall into the camera.
I've also used a lens pen to clean the contacts, and this works pretty well, and also has creates no detritus. |

->> David,
Are you forced to have it serviced in Canada? It might it be cheaper to send it to Jamesburg, N.J. here in the states? It's due south of you...
If you can swing it, I'd recommend sending in the body and lens to have them both inspected and calibrated together. |

| ->> Hi, I've had the problem on both my 300 and 400 over the years. A mount replacement on the lens and/or pin in the body has fixed it. My 400 is doing it again with only one body so I clean the contacts with denatured alcohol before every shoot and it is taking care of the problem -- for now. I know the mount or pin on that body will have to be addressed at some point in the future. |

| ->> Thanks everyone for the input. It sure looks like it is the pin or pin hole in the mount. I shot with it today and when I needed absolutely to go vertical, I turned the lens clockwise and it worked. I'll send it in soon I guess. |

| ->> David, if it is just the lens mount, it is easy to change yourself. Check with Canon about buying the part rather than sending the whole lens in. |
