->> Has anyone been using the Kindle? I've thought about picking one up and using it for school, books, and newspapers. I'm just wondering if anyone has gotten one and whether it has become a part of your daily routine.

->> Saw one for a few minutes not too long ago... The screen on it is amazing - not like a normal LCD - it's the same appearance as paper print!!!

->> I'm going to pick an eReader up soon and have been borrowing my in-laws' first generation Kindle. I like it quite a bit, but am going to wait until Barnes & Noble releases their competitor (the nook) later this month. You'll be able to try it out in person at their stores, so it'll be a good opportunity for a hands-on comparison.
Both use eInk for the text, which is easy to read and easy on the eyes. The first generation Kindle's scrolling and search function is a bit clunky (especially if reading a book with footnotes), and the Next/Previous Page buttons are too big, but I think they at least fixed the latter with the more recent model.
Unlike Kindle, the nook has a color bar at the bottom (displays covers in color) and sports an iPhone-like touch pad keyboard rather than actual buttons. I believe it also takes micro SD, so you can store extra books off the device, or if you want to let a fellow nook owner borrow a book, you can. I believe nook also reads more document types that Kindle, which requires you to send in some docs to Amazon to have them converted before they're sent back to the Kindle.
Perhaps the best feature of either of the eReaders is the instant download of the book you're looking for. I've plowed through four books in the last 3 weeks I've been borrowing the Kindle.

->> My wife and step-son love theirs. The new one has a 9 inch screen. The Kindle is much better than the Sony (IMO)

->> If they would come out with a model with indiglo, I'd buy one. I do like the Kindle, but I don't want to use a light to read in the dark.

->> I love mine (2nd generation). Don't like the thought of putting the hurt on bookstores - but while traveling (frequently in out of the way places with limited access to transportation) it has been fantastic for getting whatever book I've wanted, at any time.

->> I downloaded the Kindle software from Amazon for my iPod. Works great and it let's me keep a couple of books in my pocket. Also the photo display from the books on the Ipod is great, not sure what it is like on a Kindle.

->> I love my Kindle. I started using Kindle for iPhone, but in a month or so my eyes started to get very tired from reading off the backlit screen. Having become totally hooked on ebooks-I especially love the free samples-I decided to try the Kindle and it really is like reading paper and ink.

->> The eBook space is very much in flux right now. Kindle is kind of the oldest one out there for the moment. Several other readers are coming online with more features and more refined offerings.
Another thing you might want to consider is the revenue split Amazon demands from publishers:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/07/amazon-takes-70-percent-of-kindle-newspa.../
Amazon keeps 70% of the revenue from electronic newspaper sales, and 65% from books. Might be something to factor into your purchasing decision... |

->> Israel,
Here's some info on the Kindle's E Ink Technology. It's not an LCD where back lit light illuminates the screen. It's more like advanced etch-a-sketch technology.

->> So the next question is this: who works at a newspaper producing a Kindle edition?

->> I got one for Father's day. The good news is that the bathroom closet is no longer a paperback graveyard. The bad news is that I am spending much more at amazon in the past six months than in the past two years. Its too damn easy.
The screen is great, in sunlight and even low light. I would love a touch screen and internet access, but that would probably add hundreds to the price.
Color doesnt really matter much as it is more a book for me and not a magazine.
The newspaper content is sketchy. After trying most of them, I found the Washington Post was probably the best, but you can figure that out with the free trials. Magazines were pretty much hit or miss.
I got the larger edition Kindle. After a few minutes you forget you are not reading a normal book. The feature I like best is the ability to make the font larger or smaller. As you start to need reading glasses, this feature is a god send. |
