odd canon error msg
Stew Milne, Photographer

->> while shooting some portraits today in RAW on a Canon 1D Mark IIn, I was getting an error message on the back LCD that I've never seen or heard of before. There was a huge ? and the words "image cannot be viewed". This scared the crap out of me as I was thinking my CF card was corrupt and I had lost those photos. So I switched cards and after more shooting I got the error message again.

During a break I switched to large JPG and shot a ton of images. I didn't get the error message then. Does anyone have any idea? I also put the CF card in another camera and it said the card wasn't formatted, would I like to. A quick hit of the "cancel" button there.

All the images were there when I ingested onto my computer.

->> I've gotten that before when I put a card that was formatted in say a mkIII into a 1D classic. If I format the card in the 1D, it works fine. Also, if the card has images shot with a newer generation body and you try to view it with an older one you may get this message.

I had a couple bad Kingston 8gb cards that more than 70% of the files written to them were lost, even after formatting.

If the files you are getting this message on were shot with the same body as you are viewing them on, it's a corrupt file message. The file may have ingested, but I would wager they won't open.

->> More info. The card was formatted in the same body (IIn) as it was used. I took the CF card out of the body after I got the error message and put it in a 1D body, where I got the message that this card had not been formatted. I canceled and removed the card.

The big ? error message happened on two different CF cards (sandisk extreme III and a transend).

All the images are fine and not corrupted on my computer right now.

When I put the CF cards back in the camera, all the images were viewable and I didn't get the error message.

I only received the ? when I was shooting RAW.

->> Stew,
I had the exact same thing happen with my Mark IIn with the same results - got images to my computer and all was good - never had it happen again. I'll be interested in any further responses.

->> I would suggest just calling CPS. This happened to me a few years ago, but I can't remember the exact cause. I'm sure if you call them they can tell you if it's something that needs to be sent in. It happened to me with multiple cards too and I'm pretty sure I sent mine in for repair...Dan.

->> I have had this happen several times while shooting RAW. I have always powered off the camera and remove the battery for a few seconds. All was well after that and the images appeared on the card. I'm not sure of the cause but I have run into many others who had the same issues. The power off and battery pull seems to work.

->> Stew,
I get this occasionally with my MIIns. I think it is the chimping Gods pointing me in the right direction. (Knocking on wood) I have never lost an image. It is bothersome though when those big yellow letters show up.

->> Same thing here...I"ve had the error pop up a couple times, but have never lost an image. (thankfully) Not sure what's causing it...it does usually seem to happen with UDMA cards for me. Not sure if there is any connection or not.

->> Have it happen every few days on my Mark IIN's... At first it worried me (obviously); but powering off and back on takes care of it for me.

It tends to happen when the camera has trouble reading from the card - this can be because of problems with the camera, the card, or the interface between the two. Obviously it can happen when the card or camera is about to melt down too; it can just as much be a momentary glitch because of dust or contamination or a mfg defect.

->> Todd: The images I was attempting to look at were older ones, shot minutes before, so it wasn't a "busy" problem. It was progressive as well. First it started with a couple of images not viewable, then more and more.

So, no ones knows what is wrong? Turning your camera off, removing battery, etc, doesn't seem to fix the problem, well not permanently. It's a bit like how I treat the only PC in my house. If something goes wrong (all the time), I reboot it. :)
