Looking for flash-based "Big Picture" software
Matt Cashore, Photographer

->> Hi-

I am looking for recommendations for creating photo galleries of large photos a-la The Boston Globe's "Big Picture". Ideally it would be something turnkey that would result in a single self-contained flash file that could be uploaded to a website.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

->> You can do this with soundslides. The software exports custom sized photo galleries and/or audio slideshows with a fullscreen button and the ability to either export as a stand alone .swf or bring into Flash as a component to "skin" the player yourself.

Depending your website development you may want to consider moving towards a j-query slideshow. These allow for great customization and play well with mobile devices (which Flash does not do)

You can see jquery + wordpress on my site

you can see soundslides used as a photo slideshow on the NPR Picture show blog -

or Dai Sugano's site under photography -

Hope this helps -

->> I have Soundslides and have yet to make a single slideshow. The audio is the biggest issue, matching the length of it up with with the photos. I understand some people use separate audio software like Audacity, but to be honest, it didn't seem to be very user friendly, at least initially and my time is very limited these days as the company is requiring more of our time for less, Gee, how about that?

->> Jeff most of our slide shows at my paper have no sound and we use Soundslides. I have been able to figure out Audacity for some simple sound editing and it works pretty good. Not too hard after you poke around a few minutes.

Here are a couple with Sound. Some of the sound recorded with the microphone in my D3. The speech in the habitat piece was done with a Olympus recorder and it did not work as well as the d3. The D3 is not the ideal setup, but it worked on the fly.

->> Jeff, et al - Soundslides has an option to make a photo-only slideshow - no sound just a standalone photo player with a clean looking flash interface that can include captions and other options.

It is ridiculously easy to create. We use the software to make the 'photos of the week' gallery at our paper and once you edit the photos it probably takes about two minutes to produce the slideshow.

Here's an example -

->> With photoshelter's embedable galleries, you can customize the size to just about any resolution. Plus you get the benefit of image security and a direct connection to possible print sales.

I've been very happy with it so far on my site:

->> With Soundslides , you can enable all the options of having audio such as auto play , time between slides etc by creating a "Silence" audio track in Audacity. Its under "Generate"

Create "silence" for the length of time you want the show to be. Upload into Soundslides This enables the "autoplay " option to be enabled allowing the show to start on its own once the page opens.
