Online marketing of your news and sporting event coverage.

->> Greetings,

I've got something that's still a bit rough around the edges, but thought it might help some of you market the sporting events and news jobs that you shoot.

I run a few Web sites that specialize in news and press release distribution for clients. One of them is called BigNews.biz. Photos and articles submitted to BigNews are fed to Google news usually within 4-5 minutes of them being approved. These news release sites are also really good at search engine optimizing releases and stories so that your content gets good placement in organic search results.

In October we programmed our Newsphoto.com site so that the local sporting events that we shoot get automatically fed to our news release distribution site Bignews.biz. Here are some examples of events with photos that we currently have on Google news:
http://bit.ly/3YCi7r .

By making it easier for people to find our content through Google news and Google search, we've seen an increase in traffic and sales on Newsphoto.com. If you would like to give it a try, you don't need to have an account on Newsphoto, you can post your info directly to BigNews by opening up a free account at
http://www.bignews.biz/?go=signup . Before you post photos, be sure to read the tutorial on how to optimize images for Google news http://www.bignews.biz/blog/?p=11 . If you have any questions, drop me an email or post one here.

->> If you try this out, be sure to use keywords in your headline that people will use to find the event online.

As an example, if you covered a football game, don't just use the name of the two schools and the score in your headline, be sure to use the word "football". We like to also include the name of the mascot that represents the school. Get as many keywords as possible into the body of the story/release and the headline.

->> I signed up for this free service last year.

And even after unsubscribing, I still receive press releases from them.

So one word of caution, if you do sign up, use an account you don't mind being filled up with e-mails about band openings, record releases and the like.

I just deleted my account entirely - after this thread reminded me of the company name - so hopefully that will stop the spam releases. Unsubscribing didn't. And each e-mail doesn't contain an unsubscribe link, which makes it really hard to stop the flow of e-mail press releases.

->> Mike,

We don't send spam. The only emails we send to publisher accounts are your weekly statistics showing how many times your stories are viewed and a monthly newsletter regarding how to market stories and releases online.

I'm not showing any record of Mike Brice having a publisher account on our system. Was it under another name?

From your description, it sounds like you may have inadvertently signed up for our weekly news summary. If you sign up for the summary, we email you a weekly synopsis of everything that gets published on our site from the previous week. If you are getting these and for some reason the unsub link at the bottom of each email does not work, please forward it to me at phil@newsphoto.com or call my cell at 516-578-1386 and I'll find out what is going on and resolve the problem for you.

I can assure anyone that signs up for a publisher account at
http://www.bignews.biz/?go=signup that we don't send spam. Not only does it violate our terms of service, but our ISP would shut us down very quickly.

Regards,
Phil

->> I want to thank Phil for helping me resolve the issue.

It doesn't appear that the releases were from his system, and he help me identify the group so that I can resolve the issue Monday.

Thanks!

->> Mike,

You are very welcome. I'm just glad it was not some problem with our system that I was not aware of.

Best of luck getting then to drop you from their list.

->> Another tip when submitting your releases and stories to Bignews.

When submitting copy regarding a sporting event, if at all possible, be sure to include the rosters for both teams as part of the story/news release. If you are concerned about privacy issues, don't include numbers with the names.

We've made MANY sales from people doing random searches for a name on the Internet and they find our story along with the photos.
