PC-based video editing: Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere

->> This is really just a call for info/feedback on Windows video editing software. I'm reasonably well-versed in both systems and am considering switching from Mac to PC. Video editing is the big unknown for me. (I'm no expert in this area by any means.)

Are these programs well-regarded and useful?

If you use them, how do you like them?

What do they lack and how painful are the work-arounds?

->> Sony Vegas is a really nice, easy to learn editor. I've used it extensively for the past few years.

What I like about Vegas is it's really really fast. It loads fast, the user interface is responsive, and the way you do edits and move around on the timeline is very visual and intuitive. If you do complicated sound mixes (Dolby Surround, etc.) it's great.

For more complicated projects I use Adobe Premiere. Premiere is great if you are going to use elements from other programs in the Adobe suite. Premiere also has very robust export capabilities through the included Adobe Media Encoder. Premiere is a bit of a pig (like most Adobe products), but on a properly equipped box performance is fine. The Premiere multicamera functionality is really nice if you have multicamera shoots you're trying to edit. Another key advantage is if you work in a team or with others, more people have and/or know how to use Premiere. Vegas is not as widely known.

What I generally do is keep Vegas on my laptop for quick, run-and-gun stuff, and use Premiere back at the studio for more complicated editing projects. They are both very good programs.
