->> it recommends doing a backup, but I'm not enough of a MySQL guru to figure out a solution for my databases... have you found the upgrade process to be smooth and stable enough to risk not wearing a seatbelt?

I've never had a problem upgrading my Wordpress installation, but backing up your database every day or week is probably a good idea. I have mine emailed to me weekly since I don't post that often. |

->> Sean, with 2.5 and above, the auto upgrade function has been added so you dont need to use a plug in. So far I have upgraded my 3 blogs using the new system without issue on all of the subsequent upgrades which have been released..(which are numerous).

In 2.8.3 (I think - maybe it was MU or 2.8.2?), there was a bug in the automatic upgrade - if something went wrong during the upgrade, it would delete *all* WP installations on your hosting account! Granted, it was fixed in a few hours, but still... |

I also use the built-in upgrade feature - which has also worked perfectly for me. The plugin I mentioned is just used to backup your database, which I don't believe is a built-in feature in Wordpress. |
