Blackberry Modem Tethering HELP!!

->> Hey all:
First things first: if you attempt to turn this request for assistance into a Blackberry vs iPhone or Mac vs PC debate, I will seriously shit a golden brick and haunt you in your dreams. So don't do it; I'm not in the mood.
Second thing is, sorry for the OT request, but I've been trying stuff for like two days -- scouring the Internet and all that jazz -- and I'm totally stumped. I defer to the technocratic nerdom that is SportsShooter.
OK, so I use my BlackBerry 8310 to access the Internet. I'm on AT&T, and I pay them for the tethering. I use Bluetooth to connect my phone to my MacBook Pro. I'm on OSX 10.5.8 ...
Now I'm either crazy, or I SWEAR that the download and upload times (especially the latter) have gotten SLOOOOOOW over time. When I first set this up a few months ago, I had no problems at all and was getting comperable speeds to what we at the DMN get using our Verizon 8830's to do the EXACT same as stated above.
I recently tested my speed on the phone and got 163kbps downloads and 57kbps uploads. Super slow. And that happens no matter what my 2G, EDGE reception is like; good or not.
So, what could I be doing wrong or what might be happening? In case you're wondering, I used the following when setting up everything a while back:

Again, it worked great when I first set everything up. Fast (enough) upload and download times. But again, of late, it's gotten to where it's basically useless (to do anything other than casually browse the Internet). We use our phones as modems to transmit images from the road ... so this a big deal for me.
I really, really appreciate any help you all can give. Much thanks in advance.

->> I suspect this is not just a Blackberry problem, but a network congestion issue.
This may or may not be the answer you are looking for, but with the rise of the iPhone on the AT&T network, data delivery on network has gotten slower in many places. And it has risen dramatically over the last few months.
And there is this idea:
Super geeky (plausable) explanation:

->> That might not specifically apply, but the idea's still valid - that issue is characterized by bimodal behavior - great performance sometimes, followed by absolutely horrible ( < 1kB/s) behavior at other times.
It's definitely a possibility that network problems cause the bandwidth shortage though - it would change if you go out of the city (but stay around 3g) - has that helped any? Also, try checking your ping times when things are moving slowly. Either one of those would isolate your network as having the issue.
Have you tried tethering through a USB cable or something of that sort? (usually they'll let you try one at the AT&T stores around here) - if that fixes it, the bluetooth is your problem and you might try a different bluetooth dongle, flashing your blackberry, things along those lines. Or just using the USB cable would work too (albeit somewhat inconvenient) |

Thanks gents. Helpful so far. Anyone else out there have ideas or similar experiences? I'll add, based of Israel's post, that I've had this problem just about everywhere -- in the city, out of the city, good reception, poor reception; etc.
Thanks,

->> Have you tried Tetherberry? I switched to it from Verizon's tethering plan and not only am I saving $$$ but the speed improved as well. While on vacation I was able to watch steaming video on my laptop.

At least your Blackberry tethers. I can't get my Curve (Tmobile) to tether to my MacBook at all. |

->> Just wanted to thank you all for the notes, on and off list.
Unfortunately, still no real solution to my issue. Guess it's time to call AT&T first and see what they say. I've noticed, in general, that my data plan has been a little on the slow side of late, too, so maybe there's something to that. We shall see.
Thanks again!
