Disappearing D3 focus points
Dan Megna, Photographer

->> I've encountered a problem where, in low light, the red focus points in my D3 viewfinder completely disappear. When I focus on a brightly lit scene, the appropriate points illuminate. But if I shift the camera view from the bright scene, say f11, to even a well lit indoor conditions at f4, the focus points quit illuminating. There seems to be no relation to ISO, lens, camera settings.... The camera continues to focus just fine but I have no visual indication of which focus point is active.

I just returned from the local Nikon authorized service center here in San Diego where the techs all scratched their heads. No one had ever seen such a condition. I've reset all the custom functions and menus back to default and the problem persists.

Obviously, the next step is to send the body to Nikon, but I wanted to ask this group if anyone has had a similar experience or suggestions.

->> I have not seen this problem at all with my D3 (or perhaps I haven't noticed it?). It's certainly not that way for me all the time, because I shoot plenty of stuff in low light, especially since getting the D3, so I'm sure I would have seen it.

By the way, Dan, where is the authorized service center in SD? I always take all my stuff to El Segundo... always a fun drive... lol!

->> Thanks for the feedback. I'm wondering if this may be due to the latest firmware update which I ran a few months back.

And Thomas, I sent you and email with the service center info...

->> Dan I have the "old" 2.0 firmware if you would like to revert to the old version. I have one body on 2.0 and another on 2.1 and can say that I haven't noticed this behavior. Drop me a note with an email address that you would like the FW sent to.

->> Make sure the switch on the back on the camera is set to bottom (single point) or the middle (single plus area or whatever it's called...this is best) and not the top which is matrix. if matrix is set all focus points disappear. It's easy to flip on accident and overlook and think the AF is messed up.

->> Yeah I've noticed this too; I've not thought too much of it but I've had occasions shooting in very low light where I've had to move the camera to see where the focus point is.
