->> I am buying a body in the next week or two. I am wondering if some of you guys can chime in and give me your thoughts. I shoot a little of everything. MMA, NCAA Football, Basketball, NFL Football, and lots of concerts.
I am having a hard time making up my mind 7D or Mark II N. I am not looking at a Mark III of Mark IV. A lot of my events are in low light such as MMA, and Basketball. |

| ->> I have not used the 7 but from what I have seen it will be way better then the IIn as far as ISO is concerned. I've never been real happy with 3200 ISO on my MIIn. |

->> I use both and the 7d is pretty impressive. I like some of the new focusing features. The AF took some tweaking but I have it working now the way I like it. Had to turn down the AI sensitivity as it would jump around more than I was used to.
I just shot a press conference at 2500 ISO and would never have done that with my IIn. If you go to Indians.com the shot of new manager Manny Acta and GM Mark Shapiro was shot at 2500 ISO.
I don't like the body without a grip, I am too used to having one and I don't think it balances as well.
I think the IIn will be more durable over the long haul but if I had to choose I would go 7D. |

->> I'd recommend going with the 7D. With most of what you are shooting you need to get tight in low light (hey, that rhymes!). The 7D is a 1.6 sensor crop while the MkIIn is a 1.3 so you get more distance on you longer lenses and still get a 18mp file. As said by Danny and Dan, the MkIIn is not especially good in low light while the 7D is phenomenal. You also get more frames at 8fps. There are a slew of other features and settings (including video) the 7D has that the Mk IIn doesn't.
If you're interested I did a low light comparison between the 5D mkII and the 7D and I think the 7D wins. Check it here: http://fresnophotoblog.com/2009/10/16/5d-mkii-and-7d-comparison/
The 1D Mark IIn is older technology and it makes more sense to move up to the III or IV if you can. But in your case, the 7D is probably the way to go. The mkIIn also has the heavier battery which is a drawback. BTW, I'm starting to like the 5D and 7D without the grip. Much lighter for carrying them around for the long haul. |

| ->> I have not used the 7D, but I use Mark IIN's every day. I love the Mark IIN for day-time sports, but for night-time sports I usually don't go above 1250 ISO. At 1600, it's passible, but if I have to crop, it's big time noise. For daylight, it's a great camera. I've done some fantastic concert work with it too, but for night sports, I know it's limitations. If you can swing it, get both. But if not, I think the 7D is probably the better route. |

| ->> Pretty soon there will be a flood of used Mark III's on the market due to the release of the Mark IV, and right now you can get an essentially brand-new refurb body from Adorama for $2799. That price will only go down. With the Mark III you get the durability of a Mark IIN with the image quality of the 7D (roughly). Just throwing a third option out there! |

| ->> Well, i wasn't going to follow this thread as i've been really happy with my IIn, but after seeing the comparison shots at the higher iso by Craig, the 7D has my attention. I shoot mostly weddings now and I use a 5D Mk. II and a Mk. IIn. The 5D is my main body for bridal prep in dark hotels and ceremony's in churchs, but then i switch back to the IIn as my main body for the reception b/c they are usually in dark venues and the focus on the 5D doesn't keep up as well in low light. So my question is, will the 7D focus like the IIn in low light situations so that I could upgrade to my IIn to the 7D and have less noise at the higher iso's? |

->> Just did my second day with the 7d - can't compare it with the IIn - never owned one but....compared to the 1DsMk111, the 30,40,50 d's, 5d and 5dmk2 ( I've owned them all )- at high iso.......it is awesome. 3200 is totally usable - the same as 800 as year ago.

| ->> Thanks to everyone who has chimed in on this. From the sounds of it i will be getting a 7D. I like Dan will have the grip for sports. But like craig may take it off when i do weddings for the shear fact that its a 10 hour day most days and the lighter camera would be nice. |

->> i have been shooting the 7d for 3 weeks now, and i have been shooting with the mark IIn for the past 3 years. if I am shooting a night time game then I don’t even take the Mark IIn anymore. the images are so much better with the 7d in low light that the IIn just becomes a 2nd body to carry around and never get used.
As for the grip it is great. the fact that is can hold 2 batteries and show you the use on each of the batteries is awesome. |

| ->> Donald, can you speak about the autofocus comparison between the 2 cameras in low light situations? That's the main reason I put the 5D down and switch to the IIn, b/c it just can't focus as well or as fast in the low light. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that issue. Thanks for all the input! |

| ->> I don't have much trouble focusing in low light with the 7D. No more than with the 1D mkII anyway. I usually shoot on "one shot' during the reception or other low light situations which helps. And I heard there was a firmware update on the 7D that may address this issue. I haven't had a chance to get it yet. |

| ->> I have three mark III's and a 7D with the grip and the camera is very responsive. I think the AF speed actually rivals the Mark III's and the ISO is crazy good even under bad high school lights. It tracks like a monster and for $1700 bones, it's a great deal. I shot the whole UT AL game last week with the 7D on a 600mm f/4 and it was really sweet. tight but sweet! |

| ->> I actually shot the UGA v. UF football game this weekend and alternated between my 7D and IIN. The light changed pretty dramatically and I went from ISO 200-1600 by the end of the game. In all instances the 7D outperformed the IIN and the AF was very responsive (had a bit of trouble with my 300 2.8 IS but I fixed it by bumping the micro adjustment a bit). I was even more surprised when I was going through the images after the game and even started confusing the cameras when it came to IQ at low ISO. My original feeling was that the IIN files would look sharper and have more crispness to them (like when comparing the 40D to IIN), but by the end of the day I found the 7D files to be better. ISO 1600 was nice as well, very clean compared to what I am used to. I say go with the 7D... I'll definitely be keeping mine. |
