Read / write error on card
Monty Rand, Photographer

->> I popped in a new 16GB card into the 5D Mark II last night and shot some hockey T&I. This morning I put the card into the card reader and after about 75 images in all the other images can't be read. I'm pretty sure that the images are lost and that's OK as the teams aren't starting to play games yet and it's very early this year for photos so it's all good, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen? Should I return this card? Is it the camera? I just don't want to have it happen again or maybe it's just a fluke?

I'm going to run Photorescue Pro on the card, but with a read / write error I'm going to assume the images are toast. I did stick the card back in the camera and shot some images and they loaded up fine in Photo mechanic. It shows the original 75 images, then says unsupported file variant and then shows the 6 new photos.

Very odd.

->> What brand/model is the card? Did you format it in-camera prior to shooting? Where did you buy the card - Counterfeit memory is relatively common from sources such as eBay.

->> I bought the cards from B&H. Sandisk extreme 16GB CF cards. 3 of them. I shot another job last night using a different card and I got the same thing. read / write errors after 60 images were copied. I'm thinking it must be the camera at this point if it does it with 2 different cards???

I'm going to try a different card reader, but I doubt that would be the issue.

Yes, after the first nights issue's, I did format this card before I started shooting.

->> I'm having a hard time thinking it's the camera or the cards since I've been shooting a ton lately. I used an older Lexar card reader I had and instead of dragging the actual files to my hard drive, I dragged the folder and it worked fine. So, I'm leaning towards the card reader being bad. Is it common for a card reader to go "bad"??

->> Card readers can go bad just as easily as any other component. What's more, they're the cheapest to replace so it should be an easy theory to test.

If you're using Extreme series cards, you'll benefit from one of the newer UDMA card readers as well.

->> Monty, I recently had the same problem. My Lexar firewire card reader went bad and corrupted images off two cards. So I purchased new SanDisk reader for my SanDisk cards and it came with updated image rescue software that restored everything off my cards. YES the readers do go bad, images are recoverable if you do not use the cards.
