Plus the high ISO seems solid as well.

I've also shot volleyball with it. In both cases, I thought the AF was a more responsive than the 40D/20D, but the big advantage was the boost in high ISO. The added shutter speed was nice to have.

Of course, I felt the 40D and 20D were adequate for basketball before, but it's what I was used to. The 40D feels really slow now when I'm using it as my second body next to the 7.

I haven't shot basketball yet, probably in less than two weeks though. But so far I think the AF is far above the 40D. My 40D seems awful compared to the 7D now. Then again, my 40D was dominant in comparison to my 20D. It makes sense.

"In images captured by continuous shooting, and under certain conditions, barely noticeable traces of the immediately preceding frame may be visible. This phenomenon is not noticeable in an image with optimal exposure. The phenomenon may become more noticeable if a retouching process such as level compensation is applied to emphasize the image."

One of the problems of being on the bleeding edge. Sometimes you bleed...frame to frame, that is... :-)

->> I just finished my first day using the 7d....700+ images. I'm shooting the sequel to 30 Days of Night - horror/vampire/slasher/ bloody/ and of course - all at night...very low light levels.

Here's my take on things. I'm shooting 50d, 1DS Mklll, 5DS Mk11 and 7d.

All cameras are set at 2000 - 3200 iso, shooting f1.4-f2.8 depending on the lens - 28, 2.8, 35 2, 50 1.4, 85 1.8

The 1ds Mk 111 is not used much - slow buffer shooting Raw + Jpeg. Great pics but I think the higher iso of the other cameras are better. The 50d was very good but not up to the 7d.

The 7d totally blows me away - great contrast, deep blacks and very little noise at up to 3200 iso - I didn't go any higher because I didn't need to. The 5dMk11 was also very good - not sure which I liked better, but the full frame is a nice bonus.

I didn't shoot anything needing af like basketball but some shots of our heroes running towards me worked out way better than my older 40/30/20 d's. I averaged about %75 sharp which was better than I hoped for.

I wish I could post some pics but because of the nature of the work I do - actor approvals, Sony copyright etc I can't use any images until the movie is released but I am putting my total support behind the 7d. Great bang for the buck and very very good high iso images.

Email me for any specific questions.

Chris

I've shot over 10K images with my 7D and no ghosting has appeared at all.

Now, I didn't make any adjustments at all. Just a straight conversion. For some reason Lightroom made a better conversion. The colors were dead on. Very odd since I'm assuming the both are using Camer Raw to convert or am I wrong here?

But overall looking at the images I took at the store on my computer, I am extremely impressed with the high ISO shots. They look great.

Yes it's a good review, but as it relates to sports shooting I really didn't find it very useful. If you look at the Performance section when you get to AF performance you'll see a statement.
"We are no sports photographers...and even with our limited sports photography skills got a decent proportion of usable shots... "

Really - not a review I wan to hang the success/failure of my sports shooting on. Again, not a knock on the review per-se. But using DP Review to decide on professional sports shooting equipment is like reading consumer reports to determine which reference quality audio components you want to buy.

->> Fair enough. I agree with your criticism. That being said, I have yet to see a valid, repeatable, objective AF test (AI servo) that can be applied to any camera. I wish someone would develop one. There are just too many ways that a user or the subject can skew the results.
The only way I can judge AF performance now (without being a guinea pig and buying one myself) is to have fellow SS'ers report on their subjective feelings.
So, I read things like DPReview to find out about IQ, high ISO noise, etc which I feel do impact a sports shooter tremendously.

all the best

Robert, Yes my football images were shot with flash except for frame 2 & 3. The images were for Maxpreps, they require flash on night football games. I have yet to shoot a day game to determine if I will have focusing issues as I was relying on my flash to stop action.

http://www.sportsshooter.com/dtech/7dsamples/

Shot w/ a 300 2.8 IS lens, ISO 2500, 1/640

I usually shoot with my Mark II N and find the 7D's ISO images very good compared to my Mark II N. The focusing is very fast and accurate, but the shutter speed is not as fast as the Mark II N.
Still fast in my opinion and it is a great camera to get (until the Mark IV).
The HD video is a bonus to have.
My BIG test is this weekend where I have to shoot a couple of volleyball matches at a high school gym where the lighting conditions is very challenging.

I used it to shoot both stills and video at a Friday night football game for my local paper, and it performed great at high iso. Still getting used to the focus clusters but overall it did pretty good.

Video was a little tricky to get used to but I used it with a 24-105mm f/4 IS on a monopod (yes I felt a little silly) and shot at iso 6400, 1/30th of a second at about f/14, for depth of field, no way to follow focus manually that fast by looking at the lcd screen.

Overall a great camera for the price and for what I will be using it for, sports. Still using a 1Ds MII for everything else.
