| ->> I don't know if this is a stupid question or not. Is there a website that does weather forecasts for photographers? Something a little more specific than the vague generalities that most sites do? I was going to do some long exposures tonite and was trying to figure out if I was going to see any clouds or even rain, and maybe about what time. Most forecasts aren't really all that specific or focus on the things we would like. I searched and came up with stock images of weather. Did I just answer my own question? |

| ->> I'd suggest trying to find tower reports from a local airport. Back when I was taking flying lessons there was a phone number we could call to get a recording of the weather conditions, probably online somewhere now. |

->> Eric, I like Weatherunderground. Here is a like set up for Kokomo.
You can click on the "hourly" link under each day and it will give you general forecast details by hour. They also have sun and moon info further down the page. Hope that helps.

->> There are many weather services which will provide very location specific forecasts on a subscription basis.
For the non-subscription based (i.e. free) sites, I like weatherunderground.com. Good hourly data, % of moon illuminated, astronomy related data and an excellent, searchable hourly history. |

->> Pre-sunrise tomorrow will begin at f2.8 @ 1/10th with a temperature of 8000°K. Temperatures fall sharply to 2500°K as the sun peeks over the horizon, pushing settings to a comfortable f5.6 & 1/250th. Rising temperatures throughout the morning should peak at 6500°K around noon, forcing those shutter speeds into the mid-thousands with moderate apertures. Light cloudiness in the early afternoon will cause a further rise in temperature with a decline of speeds into tripple digits and the possible need for a change in color profile.
At sunset, we can expect another fall in temperature, back to the deep reds in the range of 2700°K, and a return to those f2.8 @ 1/10th settings as the day fades to darkness.
Sorry.... couldn't resist |

->> I just found this page, "NWS Forecasts: What do they mean?"
http://www.utexas.edu/depts/grg/kimmel/nwsforecasts.html
It's a somewhat helpful page but I really wish I could find a resource that describes weather conditions in terms that relate to photographers: If it's going to be a mostly sunny day, does that mean it will be sunny with a thin overall layer haze, or does it mean blue skies with lots of cumulus (puffy) clouds? Blue skies with cumulus clouds often make for great photographs but these days are still referred to as sunny, even with the skies filled with puffy clouds.
What predictable conditions cause a colorful sunrise?
There are a lot of resources online about weather, weather forecasting, cloud types, weather lore, etc. Forecasters have gotten pretty good about telling us whether or not it will rain tomorrow, but they don't really tell us what it will look like before, during, and after the rain.
Who, besides a leprechaun, can predict a rainbow? |
