Image toning for staff and wire photos at a newspaper

->> What kind of system or process do you use at your newspaper for pre-press toning? Is there a digital image management system that a copy editor/ designer can move photos from their desk to the toning station without a paper trail while still giving instructions such as how big they want the photo and a filename? I know the system we use at our paper could be more efficient and I think there has to be a better way. Currently our copy editors save the wire photo to a folder on a server and hand a printout to a person doing the toning with information such as size and what the image should be named. Following this the toning person crops and color corrects and puts it in a different folder for page layout. Our staff photos are handled similarly in regards to printouts but are archived in a digital management system called Merlin.
In the end I would like to know if there is a system available that would allow us to have the toning done at an offsite location (perhaps at one of our sister papers) without a paper trail. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated! |
