Rip Off Britain!

->> So the new Canon 1D MK 4 is due out before the end of the year.
USA price: $4,500 (approx £3,000 in the UK)
UK price: £4,500!!!
How can it be nearly £1,500 more in the UK than if I was to buy in the states?!?
I could fly to the US have a weeks holiday and then come back with the camera for the same price as I could buy it here in the UK.
I'd like to know how they come to these prices! |

->> Strip out the VAT element and the price is £3913; a portion of that will be import duties of 4.9%, drilling it down to £3730.21. If anyone knows a step I've missed out on, let me know.
That makes the UK price £986 ($1618.27) more than the US price.
Why not book a long weekend stay in NYC and pop into B&H, paying just $4899.38 / £2989.01 (inc sales tax) for it.
Perhaps Thanksgiving week, flying in on Wednesday and back to the UK on Sunday? Lots to see, do, eat and shoot - for probably less than the £1500 difference :) |

->> One thing to keep in mind also is you could order the camera from a USA seller, ship it to the UK, and pay all the duties/VAT and likely come out [legally] ahead too.
I would not suggest flying into the USA on Thanksgiving, noone will be open, hotels will be booked solid, etc... I used to fly TO the UK on Thanksgiving break, but I would not suggest the other way around. |

->> Patrick;
I've vacationed in NYC on Thanksgiving weekend on a few occasions and I've always enjoyed it; there's the Macy's parade and all the hoo-hah around that, the generally festive air and not to mention some of the deals to be had on Black Friday :)
Anyways it's a moot point somewhat as it seems the Mk IV will hit shelves "some time in December". |

->> There you go!
Take a vacation in the USA, come home with a new camera and it will probably still be less expensive than had you just bought the camera there! |

->> I should also add that I have neither £4,500 or £3,000 available to buy the camera after just buying a 400mm 2.8. It just drives me mad how much we get ripped off here.
Hopefully six months after launch prices will drop and I'll have some cash burning a hole in my pocket. |

This is what they say about my local Hospital in Brighton.
