Maha batteries not charging?

->> Don't know if anyone else has experienced this or not. Just had two sets of Maha batteries crap out on me at the same time. Two sets of four that I was using for my Canon 550 flash that I switched back and forth between. One set would be on the charger, another set in use and so on.
They're about 2, nearly 3 years old. Using the mh-c800s charger. After charging I put them in the flash and it takes a while for it to power up, longer than other sets that are newer. And the charge doesn't last as long when just sitting around. They are in use a lot since it's the strobe that's always in my bag, so I guess they could have crapped out. Since it's the first time it's happened I'm not sure what's going on.
I like the Maha, have quite a few of them, doesn't deter me from using them or buying more. Curious how my experience my compare to others. Also wondering if I should buy the mh-c9000 charger since it provides more info about the batteries. |

->> Have you tried the deep conditioning? Pretty sure the c800 has that feature. It's supposed to refresh the old batt's pretty good.
I have one of their smart charges and it will deep condition and analyze the batts. Lets you match sets. |

| ->> Deep conditioning, refreshing, whatever it's called, it really helps. One of my sets of 2700s had dropped down to just 1100 mAh or so on a full charge, but "refreshed" back up to 2500+. I try to do it monthly as recommended but it can be hard to keep track sometimes. |

| ->> I have tried both the conditioning and the slow charging. The c800 is the eight charger tho and it doesn't analyze the batteries to allow matching sets like the c9000. The other possibility is that its only one of the batteries in the set that is going bad. I tried taking one battery from a good set and swapping it with each of the four batteries in the bad set to see if I could isolate a bad battery causing the set to slow down. Didn't come to an answer but its a simplistic way of trying to find a bad battery. Guess my answer is to buy the better charger. |

->> Erik,
I mentioned in a previous thread that I had 3 sets of Maha batteries that were only about 8 months old quit holding a charge. None of the conditioning, refresh etc. on the MH-C9000 helped. I took them back to Batteries Plus where I purchased them and they tested them and confirmed that they are all dead. I just called Powerex via phone and told them what the issue was and without even seeing the batteries, receipts or anything they said they would send out replacements right away.
So you might give their customer support a call and see what they will do, since yours are well past the one year warranty period it may be a different story though. |

| ->> Thanks for the info Allen. I did go ahead and buy the c9000 just because the bit of extra info it provides may help over what the 800s does. If it looks like they're dead I prob will call Maha tho I'm guessing I'll be out 8 dead batteries. Oh well, these lasted far longer than any of the rechargeable batteries I had as a kid. |

->> Okay, update. The new Maha charger came this afternoon. Put the 8 batteries in it to see what would happen. Tried cycling them, analyzing/refreshing, discharging. Long story short it looks like the batteries are dead. Everything I tried came back with an error indicating there was a problem with the batteries and they wouldn't charge.
I plan on calling Maha and see if they'll do anything for me, prob not as they are quite a ways out of the warranty period.
I was a little peeved until I really started thinking about it and put it all in perspective. It was $25 for the 8 batteries, $12.50 a set, $6.25 per year. 2 years of football games, features, spot news; who knows what else? I certainly couldn't get enough alkaline batteries for $6.25 to last me a month, much less a year.
Sitting right next to the charger is an classic Canon 1D battery. I have an idea of what those cost, thankfully I didn't have to buy those, the company did. And good thing too, for what those cost they are certainly more aggravating to put up with than a few dead AA batteries. |
