->> There's a photo in this month's clip contest (sports feature) that shows an athlete running across rushing water. When the month is finished and the votes are tallied, I wonder if the photographer who shot it could tell us how it was made. The runner seems to be frozen in mid-stride while the water around them is a blur, and I don't see any obvious strobe action. I'm wondering how this was achieved.

->> The photo in question has tell-tell signs of a strobe being used. The shadows on the backside of the arms is not consistent with the angle of sunlight except in cases where the photo would have been taken in the early morning or late evening photos. Even still, the strobe would be absolutely essential to freezing the athlete in this case.

->> Lyle, how about linking to things when you start a thread. It is extremely annoying to fumble around trying to see the photo you are talking about.

->> The lighting on the runner is very consistent with a strobe, however, if she is running thru water where is the splash or water falling off the back foot if she just ran thru it? Shouldnt there be evidence of water stopped by the strobe somewhere?

->> it would be great if contest images were available in larger size and better quality, would make voting a lot easier.
About the image in question... what is the strange crop at the very bottom of the image ?

->> Chuck, I would have linked to it, but I don't think it's possible since it's only viewable right now in the contest judging, which requires a login. Correct me if I'm wrong. The link provided by Mark doesn't work… at least not for me. And now that I've cast my ballot for the category, it won't let me go back and view it again. The only way I can think of to let everyone see it without being extremely annoyed by fumbling is to wait until the judging is done and see if the photo's owner makes it available.

->> ok, lets see if i can guess this one.
strobes were definitely used for this shot. it was probably a combination of strobe and slow shutter speed for the flowing water. you can see some strobe highlights on the body and face as well as that strong shadow on the back upper thigh and arm. this was probably shot without any sunlight or just faint hints of sun late in the day b/c the light on the back rock is just weird.
anytime you slow down the shutter in combination with strobes those two seems to blend hard edges very well. the strobes were probably set on full power to give a very short flash duration and prevent motion blur on the runner. also, the strobe was probably on full for two reasons..... b/c it was prolly shot with a small aperture and that usually determines the distance the strobe light travels in the image (in photographic terms... as in for how long it would be affective for the camera to record it.)
it's weird how the front foot is touching the water. |
